Deleting with sims

Well I finally had enough. Had the 4.5k dump trailer (empty) hooked to my 08 dodge running 65 with the cruise on. I realized it started kicking down on flat ground. It eventually started smoking up a storm and no power. Pulled over on the shoulder where it died and would't start. After a few minutes it fired and drove but had very little power and black smoke if throttled too hard.

Well I gimped her 20 miles home, cleaned the EGR although it wasn't bad. Pulled the Map sensor for the hell of it and it was solid soot :banghead: Anyway, I disconnected the EGR harness before setting off.

Although it did throw 2 DPF codes (and a EGR code a week prior), the dealer message didn't show so I hooked back up to the dump trailer and put about 100 hard miles on it. The power seems to be mostly if not all back. No more dead go pedal, no more smoke. I am however getting
P-0405 EGR
P-2002 Particulate trap efficiency below threshold

I need this truck to be dependable, so ordered a AFE turbo to muffler delete pipe, three EGT 100ohm sims and one DPF pressure sim.

I have two questions I suppose.

1: can I do a full EGR delete without a tuner?

2: Am I missing anything here?

The master plan is to Order the EGR/cooler/butterfly delete and probably Anarchy EFI live around mid month next month. So the truck needs to be dependable for 2 weeks, but maybe longer with the sims.

Strangely enough, 56k. I bought it with 44k and it had had a very easy life prior, rarely towing more than jet skies or a boat. The PO (my boss) says they never had any problems, aside from the leaky sunroof drain once...

Since I have owned it, it gets worked hard and often towing wise. Last year I had to unplug the DPF via the pressure washer. In hind sight, I think that map sensor probably caused that, but who knows.

Its been about 6k miles since I pressure washed the DPF out though. Could be it never needed to regen since due to the heavy work load.

I deleted and installed a PUSHER INTAKE at 48K. I'm at 64K now. Used it with my BULLYDOG and Sims, but went EFI live shortly after that. You can use Sims without a tuner (cheaper) but you will have a CEL. There a couple of guys on here that have been running Sims for quite a while with no issues from what I have read on here. Use the search button and insert 'Sims'. Good Luck.

The egr code a week earlier was your warning sign. Probably the P0489 code telling you the egr valve was sticking. From what I've read in all the posts the egr valve malfunction is a common cause for filling the dpf with soot.
By unplugging it you've made your truck more reliable already. The egr valve could still be stuck open alittle or leaking by causing your slight lack of power. A dorman 555-020 freeze plug in the crossover tube will stop any gas flow if it's still open.

The above will get you thru the next couple of weeks or longer. Mines been like this for 9 months and I couldn't be happier.
You can do the egr delete without a tuner. You'll still have the P0405 code but it won't bother things much.
There's info on unplugging the egr valve in the tech section.

Yes you can run sims without a tuner. Just unplug or delete your egr. Add a delete pipe and your done. You have a cell and occasional overhead warning to reset. No biggie been doing it for 98,000 miles.

Excellent, thanks guys!

One question is-did you folks need to use the pressure sim or no? It was only $32 so I ordered it as well just in case.

I did order the 100ohm's because Ill already have the EGR disconnected throwing a code anyway and don't want to worry about an attempted regen kicking it into limp mode.

Like I said, its a temporary solution. The truck is necessary for me to do my job. When the truck is undependable, I am the same... Also CEL's do drive me nuts, so EFI live is in my near future. Just not yet.

No need...

I thought that if just using sims you still needed the 02 sensors? i did a delete with sims and bought exhaust with the bungs, no issues. about every half tank i have to clear codes or the overhead dinger keeps going off. most of the time i just ignore it and let it ding. does it on 10 minute intervals i think, 2 dings then 10 minutes of silence.

I am new here and I am looking for a good place to get the sims to do the egr and dpf delete. I was originally going to go with a smarty sr. But I am thinking the efilive might be a better way to go since it is a pain to get a s67me.

You might want to pm phil from anarchy before you spend any money on sims. I was seriously considering sims for my deletes, but its more of a bandaid fix. If you want true code free deletes anarchy's efi is the cheapest way to go. For the price of a few tanks of fuel Phil can fix you up.

Look up username 3Brorce and send a private message for more info

Great choice-EFI LIVE...

^It would be,
maybe when the cost comes down.:stirpot:

but, still for the $ it's hard to beat sims.

If you do your delete properly using100ohm sims, you don't have to clear the codes and the dingier never goes off because of the deletes.

a band-aid:rof that does the same as a tuner.
a tuner just clears the code, over and over and over
you just assume it s gone.

the only way is efi live.

After talking to Phil looks like I will be going the live route. May be a little more money but in the end I will be where I wanted to be if I had done the sims anyway. Was planning on running a smarty s67 sr with the sims. Just didn't wanna spend $1100 for an me version. The live will work out so much better.

Here is a quick follow up.

Got the 100ohm sims and DPF delete pipe in and cleaned then unplugged the EGR. I ordered a pressure sim as well but didn't need it. I just got back from a 1100 mile trip to Idaho and back and it went great. Picked up 2-3mpg's and not a hickup. There is a slight change in exhaust tone and volume, but still very quiet.

I am still planning a downpipe cat delete, full egr cooler delete and EFILive, but not right away. I have the check engine light, but she runs flawless. I see this as a bandaid, but it will work fine for now!

As long as you don't mind being bathed in the warm glow of the check engine light, and provided nothing actually important goes wrong (that you ignore because the light is ALWAYS on) more power to ya. As for me I like for my junk to run like its supposed to, or way better when it comes to Phil's tuning. I'll take the extra 3 mpgs with more power any day.

Ya I mostly agree with you Haulindeere. It is always better to do it right the first time. In my case that was the plan, but DPF and EGR problems forced the issue at a time when a few other priority things demanded my financial attention. Going with a tuner and FULL delete is absolutely the right way to do it for the reasons you outlined.

I do keep a code reader in the truck though and check codes a few times a week. I never clear them though for the sake of not prodding the computer too much, haha.

I'm with you SnoFarmer! My (100 ohm) sims delete just cost me the 3 sims and the rear of the 2 pipes - I'm too old to throw this poor old body into the contortions necessary to swap out that head pipe.

+ 2 mpg and the oil stays cleaner longer.

I do get the chime and the ovhd msg about every 1500 miles but I just clear the codes and it goes away again.

I spent the $ I saved on a tuner on a CTS which gives me all the monitoring of critical functions I want without messing with all those gauges. Just this week I'm trying the Econ tune in the CTS and so far, running my normal route to work and back, it's looking like about a 2 mpg improvement. It runs a little smoother and has a little peppier throttle response too.

The battle rages on...I'm like you Snowfarmer, I can afford pretty much any mods that I want short of spending $5K on mega Hp upgrades such as Turbo, etc. I ran sims for a while and they worked great for me, but i'm just too picky (finicky?) to deal with a CEL. I don't have any pinging, dinging, etc with My EFI LIVE SPADE From CumminsTuner and it has worked flawlessly for about 15K now. I'm at 64K, not a DD. Have a great weekend, watch out for yellow snow! The yellow just got covered up by 2" of fresh and it's still coming down, I got layed off from fixing the brown spots too.
Time to go plow my route:thumbup:

If I was going to "tune" my truck I would go for efi live. and leave the hp and timing alone..

To the others sims do work just fine,
are there other ways sure.
It's your truck, run it the way you want to and I'll run my truck the way I want to.

One more update.

A few weeks ago the truck began dinging and the overhead said "see dealer now" every 10 minutes of driving... No limp mode or anything and the mpg's are still good but thats enough of that.

I ordered EFI Live and Edge Insight CTS from Cody and Phil and Anarchy. I ordered them a day apart so the EFI should be here tomorrow. Im planning to upload a new tune and drive to California for, er, testing purposes. Ill post up a review soon.

On a side note, if I would have known about the damned dinging every 10 minutes of drive time, well, I still would have done the deletes with sims....But it is a pain in the . I drove about 10 hours round trip to Soap Lake and back last weekend with that noise every 10 minutes...

I still need to order the full EGR delete and will probably order a full 5" exhaust at the same time. I may or may not install the EGT sensor at that time, or I may do it sooner and pop it in the manifold as Phil recommended.
