Cummins only recommended additive

I have a 2018 2500 Cummins and ran across this Cummins Bulletin about additives. The only additive they have ever recommended DIESEL KLEEN. I tried it and am shocked at how it smoothed out the idle and sound of the engine.
I use my new truck for pleasure (not a work truck). I think it definitely is worth a try. I got mine at Walmart for $17 and it treats about 8 tank fulls. I am on my 1st tank with this and cannot say anything additional about info in the bulletin. I am using 1 oz for 3 gallons of 10 oz for a tank per the instructions. https://www.cummins.com/news/releas...7/05/10/cummins-inc-officially-recommends-power-service-diesel-kleen-cetane-and

Looks like a sales marketing ploy if I've ever seen one. I'd be more inclined to use it if Cummins published said bulletin but they never would. That bulletin makes no mention of any affects on dpf performance either. Doubt it has much if any affect but still. I highly doubt any additives are needed but if they make you feel better go for it.

Lots of forum members are running Power Service Diesel Kleen. I'm a little more comfortable running it now that Cummins has added their endorsement. I run the gray bottle in summer and the white bottle in winter. I also carry a bottle of PS Diesel 911 in winter in case of a fuel gelling emergency. I'm also using up some Opti-lube from a previous bulk buy. I like it as well. It's just too expensive. FYI, fuel additives are a pretty controversial topic on the forum. Some think they are the best thing since sliced bread and others say they are snake oil or worse. Some mix their own brew with transmission fluid, Marvel Mystery Oil and two stroke oil. If you do a search on the forum you'll find dozens of threads on the topic. I have new(er) Bosch injectors in my truck and want to make them last, so I'm running PS and a FASS lift pump/filter setup on my truck to hopefully make them last longer. One thing I noticed about PS Diesel Kleen the first time I used it was my engine ran much smoother and quieter. The added lubricity really quieted my injectors down.

Ya I use some diesel Kleen x2 and Quicksilver...a very quiet engine.

That article is nearly 2 years old. I dont recall ever seeing the Cummins C on any bottles. None of the bottles in my garage have them on them either. And they not more than a year old. Is Cummins still endorsing them? And which engines? They make a lot both on and all.

You might have bought them less then a year ago but they could have been produced 3-4 years ago.

I run it too. Definitely quiets down the injectors and pump with the added lubricity. It also boosts cetane which is never a bad thing and improves throttle response. Do you need it? No but American diesel is pretty terrible and cetane ratings are all over the place from the pump. It’s cheap at a few bucks per tank and makes a difference so why not.

I use the Power Service in our two pre-emisson farm tractors. From a visual point of view there is definitely less smoke from the exhaust pipe. Common sense tells me this would be better for the dpf on post emission engines (less soot).

I have the luxury of running a premium diesel. Co Alliance has CountryMark Premium Dieselex-4 available. I can tell a difference almost instantly if I have to stop at any other place to get fuel. It really is true American diesel is trash. I would think an additive that had the missing components would help....

Here's the spec sheet...

I'll keep that in mind the next time I'm out that way. Over here we have Southern States. https://www.southernstates.com/energy/diesel-gasoline/50-cetane

They say that this fuel has a freezing additive in it all year round for the farmers that have personal tanks but I definitely don't notice a drop in fuel economy between other stations.

See it or not, today's low sulpher fuels need some help in the lube dept. Injector pumps and injectors aren't cheap!

Snake oil.

If it was needed in the fuel it would be in the fuel already. Motors aren’t designed to diesel + additive spec. If they were no one would buy them.

If it makes you feel warm and cozy go for it. It’s your money you are lighting on fire. Add some slick 50 while you at it. Maybe some charge it battery additive. Some Lucas oil gear oil additive to your axles. Some Lubegard for your transmission. Pretty sure if we look hard enough we can find an additive for the muffler bearing to. They got something for everyone.

I used to use this in my older Ram but haven't done it with the new one. I did notice a slight bit less black smoke in my 99 but never really noticed any performance improvements. Didn't help fuel mileage or anything else.
Might not be a bad thing to run a tank of this once in awhile. Might do it on a long trip so it would get used up.

I’m only at around 3500 miles on my 2018 but was surprised how rough the idle was at startup. I picked up a a bottle of the Diesel Kleen to try and was surprised how much it smoothed out the engine. After running it for a few tanks I quit adding it just to see and the rough idle came back. Now I try to use it at every fill up. Snake oil or not, my engine sounds and runs way better with it so for now I’m sticking with it.

After reading this thread, I decided to give it a try. What the heck, it's only $16. Today was the first day so I'll see what happens.

I called Power Services and talked to someone about the Diesel Kleen. They said Cummins tested the product to death. From Power Services: An ideal CETANE (CN) rating for diesel fuel for a diesel is about 50-51. CN is a measure of ignition quality of diesel. Higher-CN diesel fuels require less time to ignite inside an engine than those with a lower CN. A high CN means the fuel ignites faster, producing a longer, cleaner fuel burn than diesel with a lower CN. U.S.-refined, non-biodiesel fuel can vary in CN from 40 to 60, and those numbers fluctuate depending on a lot of variables, from the initial refining process to the time it flows out of the nozzle and into our truck’s tank. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the government’s air-quality police, set a minimum CN of 40 across the country,

Running low CN fuel results in late burn/retarded timing that produces black smoke on acceleration or blue-white smoke when a cold engine is idling. Increasing the CN allows the engine to burn cleaner, which results in fewer regeneration events on DPF-equipped vehicles. Diesel Kleen can change the CETANE number by a maximum of 6 which is closer to the 50-51. My Shell station here in South Carolina sells BP Diesel which is not Shell Branded Diesel with a CETANE of 40. Alot of name brand stations here do not sell branded diesel but not branded diesel with a CETANE rating of 40.

CETANE ratings of Suppliers:

All California Diesel: Minimum 53 Cetane
Propel HPR, 75
Syndiesel, 60
BP (Amoco branded), 51;
Countrymark fuels Diesel-R, 50
Chevron, 49; or 51 with Techron D labels in select markets
ConocoPhillips through the 76 stations (California) 47-53
PetroCanada, 47-51
BP (Powerblend 47, otherwise 40-42)
Shell, 46;
Sinclair, 46;
Sunoco Gold, 45 (often +1-5) Sunoco regular is usually 40.
Exxon/Mobile, 43-46
Holiday Stations, 40-43
HESS, 40-42, can be up to 45.
Husky, 40 + diesel Max additives raise another 1-3 from there (41-45 max)
Pilot/Love's/Flying J/Valero/Sheetz/Walmart/Wawa: 40

Mrhavasu I wish I vould find diesel here in Aiken, South Carolins with the high CETANE rating like in California (53 minimum). Higher CETANE burns cleaner, less reginerations, etc. I can only get 40 here. If you really read about the Diesel Kleen it does other things like injector lubrication, cleaning, and other stuff. Cummins historically never recommends nothing. Why they now do this?? We will probably never know everything (benefit). I do know it helped here a lot as now I can hit about 46 cetane versus 40.

I use an additive in my Ram, because I want to do it. Everyone has an opinion and entitled to that opinion. I like to use Hot Shot's Secret, Everyday Diesel Treatment. I use it every fill up especially when I travel and not sure about the quality of the fuel. However, I am very cognizant of where I fuel up. Use what you want if you want.

Just my opinion. Enjoy the evening all.
