what would i have to do other than buying the trans and clutch would i have to do to convert my 99 auto to a 6 spd? is there any kind of wiring mods or computer mods i would have to do to get everything to work.

Its a simple straight forward swap. We did it on my brothers 97. The main thing that will need changed is the input sleeve in the t-case to accept the bigger tranny output shaft and modifying the driveshafts. The rest is just swap parts basically. We bought all parts through where my brother works so his was a little costly but if you found a donor for pedals, master cylindar mount shifter, cross member, gauge cluster optional and steering column trim would be the easiest and cheapest. Once you start it will fall together easier than it sounds. Tim
that sounds like it was on a 12v, i believe converting a 24 is a little harder to the the trans being partially controlled by a computer, dont remember if its the ecm or pcm that controlls it, but im sure some1 who knows a little more about the trans side will chime in
thats what i was thinking. i cant just pull this one out and throw the manual in and go. im sure something has to be done with the computer. im just wanting to know what that will be.
Not trying to thread jack here, but the PCM doesn't even need to be reflashed???? I have considered doing this many times, but was unsure about the electronics.
Here is exactly what is needed for the 5 speed conversion, and to look like a factory job when you're finished. The 6 speed will differ a little I'm sure.
-Transmission
-clutch
-fly wheel
-pressure plate
-throw out bearing
-clutch hydraulics (master and slave)
-bellhousing
-shifter stick and boot
-clutch and brake pedal (only the pedals themselves, the mounting bracket is the same on auto and manual)
-clutch release fork
-front drive shaft from a manual truck
-new input shaft for your transfer case (or just replace the whole t-case with one from a manual truck).
-steering column trim
-floor shifter console
-dash pocket to replace flip down cupholders
ok ive located most of the big stuff. bell housing slave cylinder, pressure plate, flywheel and clutch. im still looking around for a trans. im not dead set on a 6 spd but would rather have one. but from the looks of things i might be going with a 5spd. those 6 spds are damn expensive. if you dont mind me asking. what did all that cost you?
$1800 for everything parted out of a donor truck. Got a new t-case and both drive shafts along with several other parts I didn't even need. The clutch that came with it was almost new so I went ahead and used it for the time being. Cost me another $400 to get it shipped though. So $2200 altogether.
I sold my auto and related parts for more than the $2200, and still have more parts yet to be sold. I came out ahead! :woot:
hmm. i could swing that. i just happen to have that same amount saved up to buy the parts for my auto. anyone know where i could get the trans and associated parts out of a donor?
I didn't reflash mine, and I've had no trouble at all. Everything works just like it used to. As I understand it the PCM isn't even needed any longer, and could be taken out. I didn't mess with it though.
does anyone know if a g56 6 spd out of an 07 would fit in my truck. i found one for sale that had been damaged. not bad or anything its repairable. but looks like i can get it cheap. would it fit?
i just bought this on. couldnt find one like this one with a manual. plus i got a good deal on it. and its not hard to pull one trans out and put another in. i just found this one cheap cause it needs repaired around the bell housing. so i figure if it fits and i get it cheap. screw it ill buy it and i can weld the aluminum myself and save a ton of money.
friend, i did this on mine. its not near as easy as people are thinking.i think it cost me right around 6k. but, thats also including 1250 in SB hydraulics and a Con Fe. Then you'll have to get ahold of Bob Wagner to have you computer reflashed...trust me on this one...you WILL have to do it. It is a straight forward swap though. Also, with the 6spd, the housing that bolts to the block, and has the starter on it is different than the 5spd and auto...you'll have to get ahold of SB and get a starter spacer. It's either that or get the whole housing from somewhere. It is straightforward though.
Look dude, i have no idea about the 5spd, cuz i did the 6...but i've heard of having to do it on the 5spd too...so i dont know what the hell your talking about. on mine, before i had it reflashed, it would go into limp mode in 1st through third gears, so no revving over 2k rpm. after you get out of 3rd though, it would go back to regular, occasionally, a hit and miss type deal.
Look "dude" I did the swap, and my truck runs like a scalded dog through every gear. I DIDNT get the reflash. There is no need for it. I specifically said the 6 speed may be different, and maybe it does need a reflash. I didn't say it didn't, and I didn't tell you you didn't know what the hell you were talking about. Don't tell me I don't either.
Your sig doesn't say what year truck. Is it an 00 or older? Maybe you needed the flash because your year didn't offer the 6 speed. I don't know.
I want in on this thread, I'm hopin to be doing the swap soon too.:thumbsup
