Hello all, I am fairly new to the cummins forum site. Last week I was driving my 99 dodge 24 valve with a 5 speed on the highway when I started to lose power ( lights etc. ), basically the whole drive my voltage was very low, check gauge light was on. As the truck start losing power it acted as though the clutch was slipping ( it wasn't ) but that's what it felt like until it finally died. I had it towed back home bought 2 brand new battery, it cranks but WILL not fire. The asd relay is buzzing non stop with the key on. I checked every fuse and they checked out good, switched relays and the same buzzing continued. I read other forums about the relay buzzing but no conclusions have been made. The only reason I don't think its the pump is because I started losing power, and now it won't start. I'm really frustrated at this point.

My bet is you have a corroded 12v wire to your pcm causing not enough voltage to actuate the ASD relay. check the voltage at your pcm and ecm and see what it's at compared to battery voltage

Ok I'll try that tomorrow! Does the asd relay somehow control voltage from the alternator? Because I slowly lost all power to the truck in the span of about 20 minutes. and about 20 minutes before it shut off when i went full throttle in 5th it would cut out for a split second numerous times before the lights started going dim. And my gauges went crazy, the rpm's cycled from 0 to redline a few times. I think maybe like you said a corroded wire may have prevented the batterys from being charged? That is if the asd is related to the alternator's charging.

I didn't have much time to really check things out today but I checked every wire connection I could and nothing seems bad or lose. I could jump the relay with a wire but that's not going to fix my no charging problem. Also the truck had been sitting for about 2 weeks before I had it out driving.

The few cases that I've fixed this problem it was a broken 12v supply wire to the ecm and pcm just before the splice in the wiring harness. Just looking at the connectors won't tell you anything you need to get a dvom and check to see if you have 12volts at the ecm and pcm. I know its a lot of work but on one truck I spent 8 hours just chasing wiring harnesses and on another truck I spent 5 hours.

Just got home from checking out the truck for a bit, When I unplugged either one of the 2 black connectors to the pcm the buzzing would stop? Do I have a bad pcm? It's pushed out into the parking lot at school so I could hopefully work on it this weekend, but I didn't stay long because it's like -5 here in nova scotia. Is this possible? Considering I have no dash lights on at all.

Does your Odometer say no bus? unplugging the ecm just minimizes the load on the 12v circuit. you need to check the voltage at the pcm and ecm to see if you have battery voltage. If you do, something is most likely taking down the 5v circuit. if you don't you have a broken or shorted 12v circuit.

Find a wiring diagram for your truck and back probe the wires in the ecm and pcm connectors to see if you have voltage. Have you tried hooking up to a scan tool to see if it will read any codes?

The trucks going! I feel really really stupid but there were several fuses blown ( the window type that I didn't look closesly enough at). Bled the lines and bam she fired. Got it home from school and did an alternator test, it's shot. The voltage must of spiked when it started dieing out? Either way thanks for taking the time to help me lilbrown! Much appreciated.

Alright, now the trucks going I have more issues (not sure if I'm supposed to start a new thread or not). On a cold start it idles funny until it starts to warm up, idles raise and lower, going down the highway doing a 110 km/h it will surge or skip for split seconds, sometimes 20 times or more. And the final thing I noticed is it cuts out when I came onto it in 4th with rpms above 2000, also when i was in a gravel parking lot I went to spin it around in 3rd and the truck just bogged down (didn't shut off), tried 2 more times and it would just bog down. I don't think it's related to my previous problem bc i noticed it cutting out on the highway prior to that.
