SO I am going to do compound turbos on my 1939 truck. I have a 95 12V and will be using the stock HX35W. I found a great place that has tons of turbos from Cat engines, large semi tractor trucks ets. After much research on threads here it seems like the s475 would be a good turbo to use in conjunction to the stocker. Now because I am still new to these things, how do I know what to look for? They have literally thousands of turbos there... I still have not figured out the whole size thing, inducer, wheel, AR ratio... so I need some help on what to look for. Is there a turbo that would work well with the stocker off a semi?

I am only looking to hit about 500HP and going with 50-90 over stock injectors. I know this question is asked over and over, but please help me to know how to identify a good turbo for my truck. I am not afraid of which flange it has because I am fabricating everything anyways.

Also do I need to take the wastegate off the stock turbo, if so what do I need to do, do I have a wastegate??:confused013:

I have a compound setup using a stock hx35 with a modified wastegate, over an HT60. the ht60 is a holset turbo off of a 14L cummins motor. The ht60 is the same as an hx60 just a reversed housing and rotation. I picked mine up out of a semi graveyard for $250.00 it was in great shape.

Take a set of calipers to measure the compressor wheel and the exhaust wheel. also the exhaust housing size should be stamped inside the exhaust housing near the flange.

Fyi- Hx60 is a bit bigger than the ht60. Ht60 is the updated version of the 3b and is basically identical except for the comp outlet.

Great, thanks for the info. I will find some time and head down to the semi junk yard and see what I can find.

Is there a better one to look for than another? You went with the HT60, I keep hearing the s475 is good with a stock...

A 3b or ht60 makes a twin set. I use them cause they can be bought fairly cheap. 500 in turbos and maybe a 150 to 200 in piping and a little labor. That will be a neat old truck when done.

OK, from what I was reading many people use the s400 type as a single, I figured going compound would allow me to use a larger primary although I am just powering it off a stock hx35w.

I guess I do have to admit the 500 was a goal, I am sure once I get there and drive it I will want more. I had a Infinity G-35, it was very powerful when I got it but after a few months I was accustomed to it throwing me back in my seat at any speed and I wanted more power. I do not want to have to re-do things that are expensive and complicated like compound turbos and piping so I guess I am also planning to make this work well at 500 but allow me to add more later if I desire.

Does that change your suggestions, or I am really better off going with a bit smaller turbo?

On another note, I really have no clue what my planned mods will give me in terms of power... stage 2-3 cam (colt or Hamilton), 4k GSK, 60# springs, 90 over stock injectors, 5" exhaust, air water intercooler, ported exhaust, modified intake, stock hx35 with compound turbo, I will go through the p pump fuel plate and tweaking, it was a 160, some sort of fuel pump (Fass, Air Dog)... I may be missing something but where should that land me power wise.

thanks guys

I think the HT60 will handle what you want and a smidge more. It flows more than the HT3B but a little less than the S475. And they can be found a lot cheaper.

I have been trying to find specs on the HX60... seems like it may be around 73mm?? I looked into the S475 more and found specs for inducer, exducer and AR Ratio. I was thinking I wanted around 1.32 AR in the compound setup.

So is there a part number I should look for? There seems to be several versions of the HX60 I think some are around 2 AR... may be mis information I am not sure.

Thanks guys, I am starting to understand all of this better.

500hp can easily be done with a single and a lot less fab work. Id look for an hx52 and run it as a single. I am near 600hp with it and still not happy so I'm look towards a s484 or bigger to mount under it. Also mine is a manual and I have no issues spooling it. Towing around 18k I will get hot at first then you learn the truck a little better an its under control.

The hx52 Holset has Volvo on the compressor cover, 16cm exh housing and a billet compressor wheel.

Yeah it can probably be done well with a good single, but compounds sound like fun. I can use the turbo I have now, buy a cheap one at the parts yard, some pipe and pieces and I am all set. Most likely I will be into it for under $500. I just need to figure out which turbo to pick up so I do not need to buy another down the road. Also I may be well over 500HP with the mods I am planning, if you have 600 I am doing much of what you have plus a cam... again I just do not know enough (still trying to learn)

#11 ·
Well I just sold my transmission so I have some cash and would like to pick up the turbo this next week.

Any other thoughts? I was out at the parts yard and could not see a s475 stamped on them so what other part numbers would they be under?? Same for the HX60 or ht60

You'll be fine with the HT60 for even 600hp... Also, try to steer clear of hp ratings on injectors, it's a bogus way of saying how big they are. For the set of twins you're looking at building and the power you are after I would say a set of 5x.014 SAC nozzle injectors will do nicely.

Like said before, just look for a turbo off of an N14, that will be the HT60 everyone is talking about :beer

#15 ·
I was looking online and it seems like the HT3B is the most common for the N14, Hopefully I will be able to find something. Anyone need another turbo as well, I can pick one up for you as well. Their stuff is in good condition and indoors.

Id love another turbo. But couldnt tell ya wat id want? Lol. My truck isnt built like most of yours yet. Id need a couple more performance mods How much do they run out there?

I am not sure exactly what it will cost, this place used to be family owned and you could get good deals, they just sold to LKQ so the prices are more corperate but deals can still be had. I am buying a Allison Automatic MD3060 trans for $2500 and will try to get them to throw in some extra parts to sweeten the deal. I figure if I buy a few turbos I may be able to get them to look at the lower per turbo cost meaning we all get a better deal. They did have a few turbos for the 5.9 with no shaft play, and they have hundreds if not thousands of turbos for semi type trucks, that is what they do.

#18 ·
Well. If i were to get another turbo. Id want a bigger and make a compound system But i dont know wat goes good with a stock turbo with wastegate work done to it. I get about 40 psi 45 with my foot in the floor. But wat would go good with a stock turbo?

#19 ·
I am not doing a ton to the engine, and using a stock HX35W with the s475 or HT60 it seems to be a good compound setup for moderate power 500-600 maybe more. I could pick up another of what I get or get one of each... but I do not have much cash so it would need to be a sure thing.

#20 ·
Well. If its going to be 250 maybe 300 at very very most. Im down. I get paid friday. The only thing is shipping. Im in california. Lol. But yea. If the price is at 300 or less. Get it and ill pay you Just let me know. And if possible stay in contact cus im def gonna need help and have lots of quest on makin my setup. Lol. Just hit me up. If you want. Pm me and ill send my number

Yeah these turbos are normally much more than that, they are big. I am not really the turbo expert here, I have just spent a lot of time researching and learning. My setup will not do you any good because I am putting it into my 1939 Dodge 1.5 ton truck. I am in Oregon, so shipping will most likely be in the $20-50 range maybe more I do not know the weight or where you are. I would guess you would be in the $500 range shipped, still better than some deals I have seen. I generally see these turbos in the $700+ range if they are good and working with no shaft play.

There is a thread on here for a compound turbo kit for only $1100 for the plumbing. This is not a trivial project, you need to have a very good understanding of welding and able to cut chop and weld pipes till they work. I am happy to do what I can to help, just trying to make sure you know what you are getting into before you start dropping cash. If you had $500 you could spend on the turbo I would pick one up for you and do what I can to keep it closer to the $300-400 range… but I have no control over their pricing.

Use caution. Many semi turbos have the large AR turbine wheels/ housings that wont spool worth a dang. Some also have odd flanges that make them a pain to use.
FYI- You can get brand new S400's in the $750. range.;)

#24 ·
The garretts tend to be a bit more efficient than the borgs and have more ARs to choose from. IMO 1.25 AR or 26CM is near ideal for our use.

#28 ·
S400 is a borg frame size. The 75 denotes a 75mm comp inducer.
Other turbo makers like garrett use things like GT4508.
But there are a few turbos in that size range and each has variable options of wheels and housings and the design of those parts varies as well.
Too much to discuss here!!
Best to get real familiar with exactly what u want and look for that first. Then take pics and numbers off other possibles and research them.

#26 ·
Ok. Well. When were you Planning on going to get them? If its after friday. I could let you know for sure. Cus it depends on my check. Im hoping itll be in the 1000 range. If it is id say pick one up. But if not. Then i cant do it. Let me know wen your going. Thanks
