If it has an overdrive from the factory it is an a518. Same as a 727 with the exception of overdrive

Thats kinda what i was begining to think, but i looked at the data sheet that is in the hood and it says A727

and dont the A518 have an internal overdrive?

no, i wont be able to get one until friday or saturday, the trucks at home, and im gone at school.

 

its a 518, you have a 91.5 truck because your sig says you have an i/c truck, if it was non intercooled it would be a 727

 

ill have to check it out to be completely sure, its not that i dont believe you guys, its just that as long as weve had the truck we thought it was the 727, just that it was intercooled due to it being a 350. that theory could be complete garbage, but oh well. Thanks for the help so far

Look a litle closer at that underhood sticker, I've seen some where they list the standard equipment and then to ugrades. You may have both trans listed on the sheet. But you most certainly have an A518 auto.

 

Thanks, ill check the stickers out when i can, and try to enchance the pictures i have to be able to read everything. when i go home on the weekend, ill check out the trans and see if i can find the data plate for it.

 

if you are still not 100% certain call dodge or go to a dodge dealer with your vin and they can give you a full report of what your truck was built with. sometimes it costs a few bucks though.

 

Looking closely at his sticker, one can see "A727" . . . .

 

does the truck have a o/d button next to the cargo light button? the engine bay picture looks like a factory intercooled truck.

there might of been a screwup at the factory with the sticker with the change over i've seen that before.

 

if that is a legit screwup, wouldnt that skyrocket the value?

 

Hood been changed possibly?

Not that i know of, we got the truck in 95 with aroung 200,000 km on it, pulled the box off a couple years later, coverted it to a duelly and put a mechanics box on it. ran that way for 8 or so years. She pulled loads nearing 20,000 lbs with 2-3 tons of box and tools in it, trans cooler failed causing anti-freeze to get into the ATF and the clutches started to slip on a big load. as close as we can figure there is around 800,000 km on it, odometer stuck in the 200,000's.

there is a o/d button in it in the factory position

well if there's a od button in the the factory spot and it's intercooled i'm going to say that it's a 518.

 

finally going home tomorrow morning, so i will crawl under the truck and check the tag on the trans and settle this once and for all.

 

From that tag, it looks to me like that's an intercooled 1 ton with a 727 and 4.50 gear?!?! That's gotta be one odd combo, although the 4.50 gear could explain why there is an OD behind the trans. I have no idea why that truck wouldn't have a A518 behind it. Any chance you can get a pic of the back of the trans and / or the OD unit? If you don't have a 518, I'm thinking it's an early Gear Vendors unit. I've never seen one, I know they used them on some bigger Dodge RV's back before the Cummins was used.

 

i managed to get a couple pictures this afternoon of the trans and the drop box, not the best pics, only had my phone and it was too bright to check the pictures untill after i was back inside a couple hours later. really starting to think its the a518, ill post the pics later

I would say you have a 91.5 year truck with the a518 trans. because you have an intercooled truck and you dont have the early dana 71 rear end that came with all the 727 transmissions. you probably have an electronic speedometer too.

Not 4.05....4.50 gears. At least that's what the tag reads as....

I think the tags messed up its sasys 4.5 gear ration for sure so i think along with everyyone else it has to be a 518 unless it was originally a cab a chassis possibly?

 

It is a SRW 1 ton and came from factory with a box, as far as we know. No clue why it came with 4.5, but the more i look into it, the more interesting it gets

 

If it has 4.5s which i highly doubt i dont think it would move very quick what maybe 60?

 

ive had it doing about 120 km which is approximatley 75 mph. but she was to the point if i kept it up for long, i would need earplugs, just did the calculations, it would be running at 2500 rpm
