I have a 2001 2500 and last night while plowing my 4WD stopped working. The 4x4 light still lights up so I think my CAD may be okay. The weird part is when my 4x4 was engaged, my back tires would spin and so would the front driveshaft but not the front tires (neither driver side or passenger side).
My understanding is that the driver side axle is connected straight to the front differential and the passenger side is a two piece axle. The driver side 4wd is engaged via the front driveshaft when the transfer case switches to 4wd and the passenger side 4wd engages when the Center Axle Disconnect (CAD) connects the wheel side axle to the differential side axle. The CAD is actuated via a vacuum line from the transfer case.
What I am wondering is do I have an issue with something in the front differential since when my 4x4 was engaged the front driveshaft would spin but not the front wheels. Also, I put the truck in 2wd and I am able to spin the front driveshaft freely (without the driver side wheel moving). From what I understand is the driver wheel is always connected to the front diff and front driveshaft so shouldn't they always spin together?
My thoughts are to start looking at the front diff but if I am thinking of this incorrectly please let me know. Thanks I appreciate it.
