4x4 Not Engaging

I have a 2001 2500 and last night while plowing my 4WD stopped working. The 4x4 light still lights up so I think my CAD may be okay. The weird part is when my 4x4 was engaged, my back tires would spin and so would the front driveshaft but not the front tires (neither driver side or passenger side).

My understanding is that the driver side axle is connected straight to the front differential and the passenger side is a two piece axle. The driver side 4wd is engaged via the front driveshaft when the transfer case switches to 4wd and the passenger side 4wd engages when the Center Axle Disconnect (CAD) connects the wheel side axle to the differential side axle. The CAD is actuated via a vacuum line from the transfer case.

What I am wondering is do I have an issue with something in the front differential since when my 4x4 was engaged the front driveshaft would spin but not the front wheels. Also, I put the truck in 2wd and I am able to spin the front driveshaft freely (without the driver side wheel moving). From what I understand is the driver wheel is always connected to the front diff and front driveshaft so shouldn't they always spin together?

My thoughts are to start looking at the front diff but if I am thinking of this incorrectly please let me know. Thanks I appreciate it.

The spiders divert turning from the driveline when CAD is not engaged.

Good chance you pulled off a vacuum line where they connect on the front edge of the crossmember below the TC or at the CAD. There is most likely, but could also be on the switch on top of the TC.

Thanks Bigfish. So even the driver side front axle that is always connected to the front diff does not engage with the driveline until the CAD engages?

If my 4x4 light turns on could that mean that my Vacuum is working fine but there could be an issue inside the CAD mechanism?

I am going to try to dig into it some more today and check all the vacuum lines and the CAD.

The axle s tub inside the diff is what spins through the spiders instead of the driveline.

Yes the light may come on becasue it may come from a separate line from the TC.

It takes 5 minutes to crawl under it and check look at those lines to see i they are off.
It is also possible they were switched if the TC was worked on lately.

They have been known to come off on either end , on the crossmember or CAD.

Well, I got her fixed this weekend. I ran through all the vacuum lines and determined they were good. I had a good vacuum going to the CAD, but it seemed like it still was not operating correctly so I decided to open up the axle vacuum motor. I discovered that one on the e-clips that keeps the shift fork in place had popped out so when the 4wd vacuum was applied the shaft would shift over but the fork would not move because the clip was no longer in place to force it to slide the shift collar over the intermediate axle shaft to engage the 4wd. That explains why the 4x4 light was still lighting but it was not engaging.
