Hey guys I just bought this twentyeighth teen ram And I noticed after about a 1000 miles I started develop this rattling noise.
It's a very random noise and doesn't seem to go with the rhythm of the engine I posted a YouTube video so you guys can hear it is this normal or something i should worry about

That thar be a Cummins Turbo Diesel in all it's glory good sir; firing each of it's 6 cylinders by compression ignition and letting the fires of hell burn forth and pushing those mighty pistons down, imparting an ungodly amount of force upon the crank shaft! Behold the great power of the Cummins engine, for with great power comes great responsibility! Go forth good fellow, and enjoy one of man's greatest creations knowing you harness such power under your right foot!

Nah, that’s fine. Now if it’s starts sounding more like my old farm truck I’d worry.... They get a little more or less clatter depending on temp/altitude/barometer as the engine goes into slightly differently operating modes. You can sometimes get a bit of noise off the gear train running the injection pump because they’re so quiet that you can actually hear it. https://youtu.be/Vz253jeiLf4 :)

Not understanding the noise rattle question with this response?

I hear what you're speaking of, it sounds semi normal but if it bothers you, take it to the dealer and have them check it out.

I'm still getting random tinks and ticks during cold startup which goes away in about 30 seconds. My dealer says is normal but it concerns me and I had them log the concern in the system.

I also have a 3rd to 4th gear chirp that I noted at 121miles and the dealer said it would go away, but I'm at 18k miles and it's still there.

So what I'm getting at is if it bothers you, have the dealer log the concern and investigate it. If it turns out to be a major deal later on, you'll at least have it logged in the system at your current mileage.

Hey guys here's another video. You can clearly hear it in this one. This was a cold start on a 90* day here in Illinois

I listened to your video clip, then went outside and did a cold start on my truck (20*C here). Yours perhaps has a BIT more of that clack sound. Perhaps valve lash needs to be adjusted on yours? That's all I can think of right meow.

Sounds like my truck. They can slap all sorts of fancy injection timing/multiple events, reinforced oil pans and all that... But it’s still a Cummins. In the year I’ve owned this truck I’ve heard it make an insane amount of different noises. Take a screwdriver/stethoscope to the cp3, I’d be willing to bet that’s making all your noise. I’ve given up trying to understand these motors. A 30+ year Cummins tech told me unless it sounds like a hammer pounding in the oil pan or it follows RPM up, don’t worry about it.

Embrace the noise!

My '17 would make some random clacking sounds when cold also. Last week I did the first fuel filter change, seems to have quieted down the motor, for whatever reason. Maybe some trash was sucked in from when the truck was put together, who knows. FYI, the front filter looked brand new, not discolored at all, maybe you could just throw a new rear filter in for giggles and replace the front filter at 15k as needed.

Just my thoughts.

They do make gas trucks that are considered to be much quieter at idle.

Well fellas il keep u updated my trucks at the dealer. Its also getting the wistleing sound fixed that I have at highway speed. They already put in a new evap box and didn't change a thing...

As far as the engine noises I'm hoping to hear something tomorrow. The service advisor I'm dealing with is kinda a buddy so he's doing everything he can for me. He told me there waiting to hear back from Chrysler.

I really appreciate everyone's input!!!

Hope it's simple as a water pump or pulley bearing catching your attention in the background.
