2012 RAM turbo upgrade?

New to the forum. Anyway I have a RAM 2500 6.7 Cummins and I believe I need a new turbo. My mechanic that I have been using for quite a few years says the turbo is bad. I have been driving it this way for more than a year and now I am thinking of upgrading. Just wanting suggestions. For now I am keeping stock fueling and probably will stay that way for the foreseeable future? I do want some HP improvement or at least better throttle response or power off the start. My exhaust brake hasn't worked since turbo began having problems so as much as I loved having it not a complete must have if I can get better power and reliability without it. Thanks.

Any trouble codes? Cel? Could be just the actuator.

As for upgrades do you want to maintain the stock exhaust? If so look into fleece cheetah and the like. If not look into 2nd swaps.

I was having issues with my stock vgt. Swapped to a S465 from stainless diesel. Haven't had issues since. Runs cooler now too. Good buddy did the same on his 08, same deal. No more turbo problems. Neither of us changed our fueling.

BD iron horn kit hands down best bang for your buck if you want to move away from a VGT. You can price in their inline exhaust brake and still be under what a second gen swap would cost.

You say your exhaust is done… Does that mean your truck is deleted? That’s a huge factor.
Deleting is so risky these days, if it’s not deleted I would probably use a Cheetah or other after market VGT. If it’s already deleted I would definitely use the iron horn kit and in-line exhaust break. Mine is awesome.

It is my understanding the H&S box tunes and Raceme tunes both allow for non VGT. I am sure custom tuning would be the better option if you can get it, but both will work to run code free.

The Mini Max or Ultra both allow you to go custom tuning if you want to.

The Raceme does allow non VGT......I just installed the Smeding sxe300 kit this past weekend with the 364.5. Mine moved the turbo forward alittle like the 3rd gen non VGT is. I had no codes afterwards.

I called Smeding and I paid $50 extra for the 1.0 exhaust housing, I didn't want to overspool it and I tow alot. I run on 120hp and my egt's are good. There is more lag than having the VGT, but once I hit 1550-1600 RPM the boost kicks in and WOW! If you want hardly any lag I would stay with the .91 housing it comes with. Also...use code Everythangdiesel and get $100 off.

Im running the BD 364 kit and and very satisfied with it. Ive got CTT tunes behind it and when I want to beat on the truck, it will max out the factory boost sensor.

I was told my turbo was done. Threw 4 codes. Had the actuator changed ( was still under warranty) and has been great. The EB had slowed significantly ... meaning it would work occasionally. Everything has been good for now since the actuator change. I imagine it is just a matter of time before the turbo veins get all gummed up from the emissions stuff and then I will do a 2nd swap. Way cheaper and more reliable. Of course as they said above.. then you need a EB too... and some other stuff.... with this new administration, I am seriously worried about the EPA stuff really getting stepped up so deleting right now would be risky I would think. Just my 2 cents.
