So I need to replace my HX40.

So I know I am going to get a bunch of opinions here but I am still curious to see what the general consensus is. I bought my truck used with 140,000 on it and she has definitely been ridden hard and put away wet. And salty... It's most recent past involved a snow plow in the northeast...

My sig shows a mix of what I found on the truck when I tore it down and what my plans are as it goes back together. So far the engine is mostly back together (waiting on timing tools) and I about to tear down the transmission.

I pulled an old HX40 out of the truck. It has a 6-blade 60mm turbine inducer and an unknown 12 blade turbine. I am sure it is your run of the mil industrial HX40. This truck has so much rust... The waste gate bracket and actuator crumbled to pieces as I removed the turbo. The waste gate flapper is frozen solid, and the v-band outlet flange is toast.

I was able to salvage the compressor housing but a month of soaking in old ATF and some serious beating of the turbine housing has been un-fruitful in getting the turbo apart. The plan was to salvage the turbine and comp housings and buy a super HX40 CHRA, hardware, and waste gate assembly from BAE. Now I am ready to say f-it and buy a whole new turbo. BAE lists a new turbine housing as $200 so I have decided that it is not worth the effort to try to salvage it.

The primary function of this truck will be to tow ~6,500lbs worth of Jeep rock crawler and trailer all over the north east to wheeling events. In the future when we can afford the 14K gooseneck it will be two Jeeps on a trailer at ~12,000lbs give or take. I intend to tune the truck to give me as much power as I can and still be able to let a numb skull who doesn't know what EGT means drive home over the mountains if I am sleeping in the passenger seat.

Twins will be in this trucks future someday but I am in no rush. I am currently just building a solid foundation and trying to get the truck restored to where it was before the years of hard labor took it's toll in her.

I already paid to service the OE 215hp (manual trans) injectors that I found already swapped into my auto truck so I am not looking to buy bigger at this time. I have done a good amount of research, HX40's were THE turbo to have a few years ago. Nowadays there are still HX40 fans out there but there are more people claiming to like this or that 62mm S300 variant.

So this brings me a cross roads. I have a quote for a brand new Super HX40w pn: 4031450 for $812 plus a $325 core. The vendor said they would take my core and give me credit no matter what condition it is in. So a super HX40 for $812 is not a bad deal. Some more modern S300 turbo looks like it will cost me north of $1000. I am not thinking it would be worth it and am leaning toward buying the Super HX40.

Thoughts? :confused013:

I would look at the 62 fmw. Should b able to get 500 ponies outta it, tow well, and work well with twins in the future. Only thing is at 500hp egts will be up there. Egts and my bae build didn't mix well - c thread at the top. If you're around $1000 for a hx40 id lean heavily to a borg 62 or 63

My biggest concern is putting a 62mm in now with the OE 215 sticks and not having enough fuel to get the turbo going enough to cool the EGT's. I am probably over thinking it. But I read other people's experience where the Super HX40 cooled better than say a 62/65/12. I do not want to go spend $500 more for a 62mm and then have troubles cooling it. I am looking at the d-tech 62/65/12 and $500 for ~4lb/min more air at 40psi doesn't seem to be worth it. In my head, I am shooting for the 400-ish hp range.

I want to run a tight converter and get decent fuel economy when towing as well.

U shouldnt have any problems spooling a smaller 62 of any kinda on stock sticks as long as you add some fuel via pump tuning. The only one that may lag some is a 62/71 but you're not considering that so you'll be fine. Just sized the exhaust housing and wheel according to how much low end response and power u want

Well that price of for a non-gated housing. I will shop around for one that is gated.

Maybe I am just Mr. Bean of the internet today but finding a FMW 62 with a T3 gated housing is a tough job.

I would be willing to spend about $300 more for a different turbo over the Super HX40. But so far, my only option in that price range is non-gated. I am a bit of a control freak so I am not liking the idea of no waste gate.

Based on what I have read so far, I would want a T3 .80 A/R closed volute turbine housing. Turbos that were either advertised as or appeared to be 62 FMW's with a gated T3 housing are over $1400. That is a big step up in cost for a little step up in air flow.

So now am leaning back toward picking up the Super HX40 and getting my truck down the road. Then eventually I'll learn more about compounds and budget twin builds.

So here is what I ended up with. A reman Super HX40 from Turbo Supply, Inc. Only $650 +$350 core and I do have a valid core to send back.

It is looking good. Like they actually built me a Super HX40. 7-blade 60mm inducer, 10-blade turbine wheel.

But...

:banghead::shock:

They sent it with an 18cm turbine housing... I have already called and asked what the deal is. They are trying to locate a 16cm housing to send me so I can swap it out. It's been two days of them looking. I am getting nervous...

I am not denying that the 62 fmw flows and cools better. But correct me if I am wrong here. I can be down the road with ~400hp and manageable EGT's for $650 IF they can find me a 16cm housing. A gated T3 foot 62fmw will cost me more that double that for a 50hp gain. Right now, inwould rather put that $800 into gauges and other odds and ends. Now, if they cannot find a 16cm housing. Then I will be forced to spend more money.

I am open to getting pricing and details on a 62fmw configured to your recommendations. PM me or post here. For some reason on the autoguide app I cannot tell what company you are with.

Still on the hunt for a 16CM wastegated turbine housing for this HX40.

Turbo Supply is basically just twiddling their thumbs till one comes in on a core exchange.

I have a couple options:
  1. Find my own turbine housing and they will refund me for the 18CM housing they sent me
  2. Return the entire turbo for a refund. (Not sure if I get to keep my full core charge that has already been refunded but I damned well better)
  3. Option two basically means I sold my no good core for $325 so that gets me closer to buying a 62FMW

I would rather just get this done with no more money spent so if anyone has any leads on a wastegated HX40 16cm housing, please let me know.

Found a 16cm housing a few weeks back. Had to join a forum for Mitsubishi Eclipse guys to find it. Only bummer was I had to cut and turn the waste gate arm to stick the waste gate actuator off to the side like the original HX40 that I had. Apparently Holset had to do this on 2nd Gen 4x4's to clear the shock tower. Not a big deal. Happy to have that box checked off. Now if only I could find what I did with that dammed oil inlet fitting....
