Can anyone tell me why it is that diesel is so much more then gas when diesel takes less to refine, has less additives, and is a lower grade of fuel?

I think its because it is now ultra low sulfur diesel. Back when it was low sulfur it was cheaper than gasoline. That and the fact that uneducated morons that run this country think that diesel pollutes way more than gasoline im sure there is some sort of higher tax on it as well. I know I just payed 3.75 a gallon yesterday. That is up from 2.99 just a couple months ago. Its really starting to hurt the wallet.

I am sure part of the issues in winter is that we are competing with Home heating oil. That said I don't expect it to go down too much in the summer.
Unless the process to remove the excess sulfur is difficult I just don't get it.

the fact that the epa has been putting their "fuel mileage estimates" on new factory gasoline vehicles for almost decades now, but never in that time recognized the SUBSTANTIALLY (almost double in some applications, like 3/4 ton trucks) higher mileage potential of diesel. . . . . . .i dont think its a fluke (i dont believe much in coincidence) that 1)diesel is more expensive, and 2) the facts about diesel emissions/mileage has been put on the back burner by the epa (government protection agency) for so many years. i dunno what EXACTLY is goin on behind the scenes, but logic tells me that theres plenty and i could spit dozens of prospects in a matter of minutes. obama himself never said he didnt like the high gas prices. just "i wish they hadnt gone up so quickly". dont plan on anything goin down anytime soon. this could all go away if we just drilled here. . .yea, i know the moronic argument. . ."side2000 it would take 10 years before we would experience the benefits (cost of fuel) of drilling our own oil". . .they said the same thing 10 years ago. and 10 years before that. and 10 years before that. it would take a fool to believe we wont be using fossil fuels 10 years from now. and IMO it would take a fool to believe it would take 10 years to start fillin gas stations w/ our own fuel. . . . . . . . . . . . .

if we lose our world reserve currency status, plan on spendin 7-10 dollars a gallon. the more they print, the closer we get to losin the "world reserve currency" title. . . .thank you obama regime, what would we do w/o you!

The bad thing is that while some oil producing countries keep the price low we are in the big picture not too bad off.
My Daughter lives in Ireland Diesel there is 1.33 Euro per Liter = $6.96 per Gallon! I also saw post by Wassas where Norway an Oil producing nation it is at about $8.80!

The price sucks, but it could be a lot worse!

I'm sure with good ol american ingenuity, we could have our own gas alot faster than that. If the epa and tree hugger's would stay out of the way.

The fact that the demand is so high over in areas like China, Indonesia and those areas has also driven the cost up world wide. They make everything... thus use a lot of fuel, thus driving the cost up.
In Europe, that is what socialism gets you, so vote anti - socialism and again Obama. I agree with what side2000 said as well.

Side2000 mentioned some very good points and one that I had left out. We do get double the mileage of our gasser counterparts. With that being said it only stands to reason that our fuel should be double the price, right? We should be thanking our government that it isnt double the price of gasoline. Thank you Obama. I think my next step is to get on welfare. All I have to do is quit my job and become a junkie. Then I will have the best healthcare and just sell drugs to support the cost of fuel. I just need you guys to keep working so I can benefit from all this.

My theory: The US military is the largest consumer of #2 diesel= no tax paid, The airlines and shipping industry us #2 and jet fuel (nearly the same)= no tax. The railroads use a tremendous amount of #2= no tax. Power plants, Farming, Mining account for a lot=no tax. The trucking industry uses millions of gallons per year and while they do pay tax they are able to simply add a fuel sir charge and pass it on.

Who does that leave to pay the tax? You and me.

Its business, supply and demand. The more you demand the higher the price they get for it. They dont give a shyt about the consumer, just the bottom line.

the only reason we pay 1/2 the price that other nations pay (for fuel) is our currency status. oil is traded in u.s. currency. . .we will pay equal, if not more, if/when other countries decide the u.s. dollar isnt worth using. thats when we lose our "world reserve currency status", and every1 flips out cuz commodities double in price overnight. . . .

We pay so much for fuel because of the monopoly, known as big oil and a $hitty government that does'nt stand up for its people. We all know we went to Iraq for oil not terrist. Now we control that oil and our prices are higher. Thanks Bush, Chenny, and good ol' Obamaladen.

assuming you must have copious amounts of time and experience in iraq (or another middle eastern country in the last 10 years), along with a thorough understanding of the entire middle east's history. . . .(which would be required to make such a bold statement that "speaks for all of us") i ask that you elaborate and educate the uneducated who dont have the vast experience you must have.

They make the cheap disposable crap that nobody needs...

They make the plastic toys that are in the happy meals at McDonalds... The ones everyone gives to their kids... The kids will get tired of them in a few months and throw them out.

They made the old Tube TVs that are rotting in thrift stores and landfills.
They make the plasma and LCD TVs that everyone's throwing out.
They make the 3d TVs that everyone's buying to replace their LCD and Plasma TVs with...
They'll be making the Virtual Reality crap that everyone will be replacing their 3d TVs with.

They make the Blu-Ray player that's hooked to the 3d TV and the DVD player that was hooked to the LCD TV...
They used to make the VCR that was hooked to the Tube TV...
They will make the next big thing that's gonna be hooked to the Virtual Reality machine.
They also make the Satellite TV receiver and TiVO that you use to record your million channels of horse crap...

They make the laptops and other computer equipment that's outdated within a month of buying it.

They make the fake Christmas Trees that everyone threw out in January...

They made the American flags that everyone had on their car windows after Sept 11th... I still see a few that have fallen off and are in the storm drain...

We are paying the Middle East for fuel that we use to free their nations. Meanwhile they hate us and kill our soldiers.

We are paying the Asians to send us garbage that fills up OUR landfills... But it's in disguise and we actually think we want it.
We are bolstering their economy, meanwhile they steal our military secrets and reverse engineer our weapons technology.

We have nobody to blame but ourselves for high fuel prices and everything else that comes our way.

America has been the land of opportunity since she was born. It's been a major superpower for almost as long as well...

The candle that burns the brightest only burns for half as long.

Pele... I'm in full agreement with you... But you listed a ton of stuff they make, that we buy and how do you think all that is made and transported... On top of the fact that like 80% of the cars and trucks over there for civilians (Lord knows how many of those there are) are on Diesel.

We (the USA) are sitting on what is projected to be as much or MORE oil than there is in the Middle East... why can't we use it? Hippies and the Liberals in Congress and the Oval Office. They just found a HUGE NEW oil field in N. Dakota (my buddy just left to go work it), and it's there, but they can't use it (he is building some piping out there or something). So i understand your frustration... Believe me I do, not a fan of what is going on. Voting is the only way (other than another war to fix it... so vote to stop what is going on)

there is the problem. there arent enough responsible voters (people who look at politicians records, not rhetoric to decide who they vote for) to do anything about any real issues. thats why we are in the boat we are in. and thats why we have the president we have. for too long politicians have manipulated the ignorant and the dependant. . .

The airline and shipping industry pay no tax? That's news to me! Royal Dutch Shell is on the brink of greatly simplifying the oil shale extraction process. If the estimates are accurate we'll derive 20-40% of our oil needs from the USA.

well that is why Im for taring & feathering those politicians that lie to us (the Voters)!

Also, we did at one time have a "test" or assets to vote, that didn't work to well either... it's the nature of the beast.
Look I live in Idaho... the MOST right wing state in the union... You think I like were we are no! I want to succeed if it gets worse. But other than succeeding from the Union as the South did in 1861, and causing another war... i chose to vote, educate those who don't know anything to vote. If you/we don't do that and vote... war is coming it's inevitable. Until then, we have to weather this and move on, Nov. 2010 was great, lets keep the momentum and get Obama, and Ried out in 2012!
