i have a 94 3500 dually 4x4 five speed and i was wondering what would make it sputter and then puff out white smoke? i changed the fuel filter but that only helped a lil bit and then when it gets warm it helps alot also

air leak.... lift pump could be bad that will do it. There is a primer plunger on your lift pump, it has rubber over it feel around it really good for fuel. If it has fuel leaking there the pump is bad. If you replace that also replace the 90 rubber hose that goes from the lift pump to the fuel heater canister.
Chances are that is your problem

well i was wondering if it could b the fuel or head gasket. it sat for over a year with the same fuel in it

well maybe but diesel doesn't go bad fast like gas will

Honestly 90% of the time it is sucking air somewhere into the fuel lines. It can be doing that due to what I said about the limp pump

thanks. i changed the fuel filter and i couldnt find a primer on the pump do u happen to have a picture or description. what r the chances it is something more serious?

and i forgot to mention that if you ease into the pedal its fine but if u stomp it it does it

The plugger on the lift pump is black rubber it sticks out on the end of the pump. It is on the lift pump not the p pump. The lift pump is down on the block below the fuel filter.

Here is a picture of the lift pump the black thing is the primer. This isn't were I bought mine. I found one somewhere for $89 but can't find it now, but anyway there is the picture.

If it's been sitting for a year you should get some fresh diesel in there and a cleaner.
