Ok.. Iv'e asked this in the past and didn't get to far. But now I know more than I did back then about possibilities that could cause my issue.

To keep it simple my truck has white smoke at start up issue it's not overwhelming but it's there. (I usually rev it up 4-5 times to clear most of it out) Slight white haze for the first 5 miles or so and then it gets better but still seems to be on the grey side. Even when the truck is hot and is started it does this. Weather is nice i'm in Arizona now so I can't blame the cold.. Iv'e installed a Fass, new injectors and turbo and still has the same issue. Did a compression test and the truck passed that no problem. Ran it with and with out the Edge- same issue. I'm no mechanic but Iv'e learned quite a bit over the years owning a few of these trucks but I can't seem to get rid of this issue.

My last option is maybe it's something to due with the VP? It's a reman pump and was already installed when I purchased the truck. (It's painted black and iv'e heard from shops in the area those reman pumps were known to be bad..) (iv'e never heard of such a thing but the shop is one of the best in Phoenix) Trucks always ran fine- No codes what-so-ever and never has been any so I never thought to mess with it. I see some smart owners here everyday and hoping to get a good opinion on what can possibly be wrong or what road I haven't already gone down trying to eliminate this. :confused013:

Thanks for taking the time to read.

Black painted pump back in the day where CZ made pumps that where super cheap typically well below 900 dollars. Don't see much of those any more.

No your compression test what numbers did you get?

How about pop testing the injectors?

Grid heater works fine. I forgot to add that into the original post. I have the numbers for the compression test at the shop I can get those a little later on today. I didn't do a pop test on the injectors they're literally brand new from CPP. It's actually my second set of injectors from Jamie because when the issue was still there after switching them out he sent me another reman set and those were installed leaving the truck with the same problem.

If the truck is showing no engine codes leading to the VP being a issue is it possible that it can still be bad?

What is your fuel pressure? Have you tried loosening the fuel fill cap for a couple days and seeing if the problem persists?

Fuel pressure is 16-17. I haven't tried loosening the fuel cap. Just curious how that may solve the problem? I'm learning a lot and any knowledge I can get helps.

On mine the tank pressurized. This caused extra pressure on the VP. The pressure caused the timing to be off and blow white smoke for a few min until it warmed up. I couldn't believe it worked when another member suggested it to me.

I'll give that a try for sure. Only thing is the white smoke is there rather the truck is hot or cold.. I have noticed when I'm fueling up I can't pull the fuel lever down all the way as it backs up and cuts off the fueling. Usually half way it works fine. It's been that way ever since I replaced the sending unit a few months back. But the white smoke issue was present before the sending unit was replaced. Guessing the vent is plugged?

Yup mine did the same thing... warm or cold. By warm up I mean a couple minutes of run time, but I could cloud an entire parking lot with white smoke. I pulled the fill cap off, stuffed a bunch of rags around it to keep dirt out and the white smoke went away. My problem was caused by compression leaking past the copper washers that seal the injector to the head. It was pressurizing the entire fuel system

You sir may be on to something haha. Mine doesn't smoke quite that much.. Only if it sit for a few weeks without being started. Even before the sender swap it was doing the same problem though but this is worth a shot to see if it'll fix it. How did you go about fixing yours?

Throwing bigger injectors with new copper washers in it :hehe: I'm not sure what actually caused the copper washers to start leaking compression... All of the hold downs were tight when I pulled the injectors out. I did clean the hole and seating surface of the head when I had them out. Did you inspect the washers the last time you had them out?

if you register your ESN with cummins on their quickserve website, they lift a injector bore brush for the 5.9l cummins, the is specifically designed to clean the copper washer area, and where the oring sits. might try using it and see if they seal better afterwards.

if you need it i can find the p/n again for you.

I checked them and they did seem fine. Makes me wonder though if thats been the problem all along. having a few new sets of injectors installed over the last 8 months with the same issue still existing would be crazy if thats really all it is.

Offroad-- I may need that it sounds like a good idea.

I used a 12 gauge shotgun cleaner, made sure a bunch of the wires were pointing downward, and welded the end to a rod. Cracking the fuel cap and leaving it open will tell you if this is even the issue though.

Will do. Should I leave the truck sit for awhile with the gas cap cracked?

Crack it, stuff rags around it (Make sure it can't tighten itself down) and drive it like normal for a couple days. I think within a couple starts my white smoke went away

Sounds good. Swear if this fixes this problem i'll be a happy guy. I'll keep you posted on results within the next few days.

One thing at a time but if this isn't the issue.. what are some other options?

I would say have the injectors tested to see if they are getting low pop pressures or pissing

Yeah that's pretty much my only other option. It's my second set from Jamie at CPP and he swears they're perfect. Doubt he'll do any kind of return or swap if they are bad and if he would it'll take a few weeks I don't have for the truck to be down.
