CAI is way over rated. If nothing else the exhaust should help lower your EGT's. Do youse a good high flow air filter on the intake side though. CAI's probably do more for naturally aspirated engines.
I agree the CAI cost a lot for as little as they do. If I was in your position I would:
Chop the cat and muffler out and splice in an aeroturbine 4040XL muffler.
Gut the intake tube and filter box and put in a pod type filter from amsoil.
