1: fill out your signature so we know what you are running
2: it depends on what you want to do with your truck, whether its a play tuck or work truck, or whatever else in between will determine which programmer is best for you
3: now the rumors of people dropping transmissions out of their trucks are true but that is people running way to much power through a stock transmission. a buddy of mine had a programmer and then stacked two chips on it and dropped the trans within 20 minutes. so yes you can drop your trans but if you are careful you will be fine.
now in my opinion the best programmer for a cummins is a smarty it will produce tons of power and has by far the best adjustability from torque management, to rail pressure and several others.
before you start messing with programmer i would recommend getting gauges EGT, boost, and Trans temp if you have an auto
