I also just noticed, on my new to me '96, that the waste gate actuator has no hose on it. I was thinking "Good, so that means it's not working and there is a boost leak on the compressor side. This may solve my problems."

(See my question below about low-load smoke.)

But, there is no fitting on my compressor housing for the hose. The tag says HX35W. Why do they put a tag on the compressor housing that says it has a waste gate, but no fitting on the housing? What gives? What do I do with the hose?

If there isnt a fitting on the compressor housing then there should be a boost refrence line from the turbo wastegate to the afc on the injection pump. The owner before you probably disabled the wastegate.

The boost hose is probably on a t-fitting on your afc.
