For all you homebrewers, where are you buying your KOH? I'm having a hard time finding some, without getting ripped off on the internet.

I bought mine off ebay. I don't know how good of a deal I got but I paid $30 shipped for 10 lbs. The seller regularly sells it for that price so you should be able to get it there.

Too bad I've only used about 2 teaspoon fulls making sample biodiesel. :lol3:

No, I've got sodium hydroxide, but potassium hydroxide is supposed to get a better reaction. A lot of people are using it, but it's just so hard to find it.

I have a huge supplier for potassium hydroxide, the only problem is that it comes in 50kg sacks and I'm not sure if I can get it shipped to the US via UPS, Fedex, DHL..

Also the shipping might cost a lot and drive the cost per gallon of BIO up too much.

I don't know about Home Depot or Lowes, but I started getting my stuff from Utah Biodiesel Supply - Biodiesel Homebrewing Supplies, Equipment, Processors and Information, but I found a place about an hour away from my house that sells everything that I need in whatever quantity I want. By buying in bulk from this place I should be able to lower my costs to make bio to $.80 a gallon.

It's called "caustic potash" and available from chemical supply stores. I just found a local supplier. It's running me $1.79/lb now - in 100 lb bags, out the door, after taxes.

KOH works much, much better for high titration oil. NaOH is fine if your oil is pretty pristine, but for the well-used stuff that I get, KOH is the stuff of choice.

I bought off ebay the 10 lbs also - but the shipping costs almost double the price. The high cost of methanol makes the price of biodiesel higher - but it's still ~1/4 the cost of diesel. Maybe less if you can optimize your usage of methanol.

I think I'll use up the NaOH I have for now, since my oil is titrating at only 2ml. I found a chemical supply store that I'm going to go check out. Thanks for the info guys.
