Whats needed to turn engine over?

776 Views 6 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  KMKDIESEL
I going to remove my inj. pump for repair, but not sure what is needed or how to rotate the engine over to set the pin for TDC.
I thought that the balancer would have a center bolt. I read about barring the engine over, but not sure where to do it from??

Thanks

barring tool fits into a hole in the bellhousing and engages the teeth on the starter ring gear to turn the engine over.

Some people will just turn the engine by barring over the alternator or one of the small bolts on the balancer, just be careful, its easy to snap those bolts!

I tried the altenator, but just spins the alt. pulley. Do you do anything special to get the alt. method to work???

What would you est. the cost of a shop doing the R&R of the pump??

You can only turn the engine one direction with the alternator.
So of a pain if you miss TDC and have to go all the way back around.
With a barring tool you can go both directions.
The beginning of the timing instructions here explain the barring tool> 12 Valve Timing

I made my own barring tool by welding an old starter motor gear to a socket.
