What RPM To Set High Idle To While Sleeping In Truck Overnight

67629 Views 114 Replies 46 Participants Last post by  RedNeckCummin
Guys,

I am going to be doing a bit of traveling. Due to my cargo, I will be sleeping in my truck. For about a 6 hour sleep time, I will be idling the truck to stay warm. What RPM should I set my MM to? I was thinking 900. What say you?

**Oh, and OF COURSE, 2 days before my 3,000 trip, I discover that when I am in 5th or 6th and I step on the throttle, my clutch slips! I knew this day would come, just hoped it would not come so soon. So it looks like after I get back I might be in the market for a clutch. Damn it.

Set the throttle to motel 6. These trucks are not semi trucks. You cant idle them for any period of time. Thank the EPA
I'd say 1100.

:agree2: Even states in the owners manual, do not allow excessive idle time.
I was under the assumption high idle (1100-1500) was ok versus the reg idle (750)?
F*ck the EPA/cops/owners manual.

There is nothing in the manual that indicates high idle is ok for extended periods of time
Yah thats rite... F the owners manual. F the people who actually designed the engine.... Atta boy
It says that because of the emission stuff, correct. But if all that stuff isn't on you should have no problems. Or am I thinking incorrectly?
Yes it is the emissions equipment that prevents extended idle. If you are deleted its a completely different story
If you must sleep in the truck I'd recommend taking lots of blankets or a good sleeping bag. You can crank the truck on occasion if you get cold, but I'm not sure I'd recommend idling for 6 hours. I've idled for probably an hour before, but I don't think extended idle times are very good for the engine.

As long as you're deleted if say run it at 1,000-1,100 make sure the exhaust brake is on too that way if it cools down a bit you won't freeze!

I left mine at 1100 for 6.5 hours the other night. No problems. The straight pipe makes a nice hum, that rocked me right to sleep

I do not have emissions stuff to worry about.

I need to stay with my truck, but I cannot drive for 23 hours straight safely. It depends on how cold it gets where I stop. But I have idled gas engines for 5-6 hours before at their default idle with no issues. I figured it would not be an issue, just wondered what RPM is best for this truck.

Looks like I will do about 1,100 RPMs and call it good unless someone argues otherwise.

Thanks!

Dude you have 6 posts and what 3 of them are on this thread. I do not have emissions equipment on my truck. What are stating does not apply. I guess, "Welcome to the Forum"? :spank:

I used to own a hotshot business with 5 3500 Cummins trucks. All were over the road and slept in their trucks on a regular basis due to the type of cargo. All trucks idled for years without problems. With that said they were all 03/06 without all the emissions. I have heard that idling for periods of time builds up carbon in the cylinders causing damage over time but we never had issues.

Take it for what it's worth and go easy on the tranny. She'll pull the trigger on you 100 miles out with reverse only.

I guess that means i dont know what i talking about huh???? So after i post 1000 times i have more knowledge of the cummins powertrain??
It never ceases to amaze me why people will put more weight on what people post on a forum instead of listening to the people that actuall designed and built the engine

No emissions, no worries. Keep idle between 1-12k rpm and you'll be fine. Don't idle at normal idle for extended time because engine will lose to much heat. Oh and don't be surprised when you jump back behind the wheel to see your EVIC showing your mileage tanked. Just reset it.
