Early nv5600 comes with 1 1\4 shaft , NV5600 Transmission Parts Dodge,case,clustergear,input shaft

if mine was 1 3\8 i would not ask in first place .

http://dodgeram.org/tech/transmission/nv5600_spec.html

heres some reading for the guys who dont know.

I thought the 5600 had the 1-3/8 input shaft ?? :confused013:
From "John P. Callan" [email protected] who has installed the NV5600 in his 1998 12 Valve Ram.
Chrylser and New Venture Gear beefed up the NV-5600 and the clutch for 2001 to better support up-rating the engine. Research at the Chrylser Proving Ground and using test trucks with uprated engines revealed that the transmission's input spline shaft sheared off (metal fatigue) after about 150,000 miles of towing their 20,000 lb.test trailer all around the western USA. So for 2001, the NV-5600 has a 1 3/8" 10 spline input shaft instead the 1 1/4" 12 spline shaft used in prior years. A new fly-wheel has an improved, larger pilot bearing, too. The clutch is 330 mm in diameter instead of the 300 mm version found in the 2000 and prior years. The new clutch can handle much more torque and is quite a bit bigger, using double the number of bolts to hold it to the fly-wheel.
A whole new transmission. You can't swap to a bigger input on the NV5600..
you are also wrong !

Well apparently you know more then everyone else about the NV5600 then. It's been common knowledge for YEARS that it can't be swapped. But I guess if you don't want to share you intimate knowledge, and new found ways to upgrade the input shaft with the rest of the cumminsforum word then that's fine....

Not sure why they think it can't be done but it does require tearing down the entire trans to get it out. I think you'd need to upgrade to the brass synchros as well. This place has a list of parts including the 1 1/4 and 1 3/8 inputs.

A web site with a bunch of parts doesn't mean it can be done. And no where on that page do I see where it says the input shafts are interchangeable. There is a new style 1 1/4" input to accept later style snychros...

That doenst mean it cant be done. But for years the general coconscious around here, ever time this subject has been brought up, has been its not possible and the transmission needs to be replaced with a later model to gain the larger input shaft.

If the OP has proof that the shaft can be upgrade....lets see it. I don't see how asking for proof of something that I've never seen documented before is being 'Mr. Cool Guy' If you're going to boast you can do something that's never been done before on here, then lest see proof of it....

Show me that, and ill admit I was wrong.

The reason you cannot upgrade the shaft is because the two different inputs use two different synchros. The smaller one that is currently in the OP's truck is the old style and its synchros are rarer than unicorn piss. To put it simple the bigger shaft won't synchronize with the old synchros.

So what about installing the newer style gear with synchros ?

They make an updated small shaft to use the new synchros.

Sounds like it is possible, but given the work to tear it down, and parts to buy to convert it, not to mention being in uncharted territory, I think it would be better financially, labor wise, and headache wise to just buy a used 1 3/8" nv5600.... Btw there is a few in the classifieds as of yesterday....
