Good day all,

I need to add some coolant to the system in my truck, and dont want to add the wrong kind. I've heard horror stories of coolant taking on a vaseline like consistancy if you mix the wrong one's. I would really like to avoid this. Is there any way to tell what is in there currently via color or somthing?

I will be draining/flushing the system in the future, but need to top off now.

Thanks for any advice or help in advance,

Ron

What color is in yours currently?
Factory fill is mopar red. for as few times in the life of the truck that you will need to add/change coolant I just use the mopar stuff.
This same coolant can be bought cheaper under a different brand name, I'm not %100 sure on the name thought...maybe zertex.
I think you have the right idea about mixing, I avoid it also. If you are unsure what is in it, then I'd call it a good time for a coolant flush.

Well if i can't determine whats in it now, (Currently red in color) then flushing it completly it will be, Just not sure if Red coolant means a specific kind, or are others red also? It would be nice to add some for now, then service cooling system when i really had the time, But I'll make time rather than risk goobering up the system with goo.

So if Red coolant is specific to one kind, what kind is it? And thanks a million for your reply.

Valvoline Zerex G-05 is what most use available at Napa & others.

Approved coolants.
Your Dodge Ram is factory filled with a (Glysantin) G-05 HOAT coolant. The following information is noted in the Dodge Ram Service Manual: " CAUTION: Mopar Antifreeze/Coolant, 5 Year/100,000 Mile Formula (MS-9769) may not be mixed with any other type of antifreeze. Mixing of coolants other than specified (non-HOAT or other HOAT), may result in engine damage that may not be covered under the new vehicle warranty, and decreased corrosion protection".

At the present time, a few G0-5 HOAT coolants are available. All of which are suitable for use in the Dodge Ram CTD. The following list contains the coolants, which are readily available in concentrate:

1). Mopar 5 Year/100,000 Mile with (HOAT) Embittered: This is available at your local Dodge dealer; however, the price ranges between 26 and 34 dollars per gallon. It is dyed pink or can be red/orange in color.

2). Ford / Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine Coolant - Ford Part #VC-7A: This is available at Ford dealers. I have purchased this coolant on sale for 12 dollars per gallon.

3). Valvoline Zerex G-05 Hoat - Available in concentrate. The NAPA part # is ZXG051. NAPA carries all of the Valvoline product line. If they do not have it on the shelves or behind the counter, a store associate can order it for you.
