quick how to on replacing the
thermostat and water pump.

remove thermostat housing via
7mm bolt ( 3 )

remove old thermostat

clean off facing and apply gasket sealant, and
replace with new thermostat

next remove the water pump via 10mm
bolts ( 2 ) - note that it really helps with
access if you remove the airbox if you still
have the oem box

try and dry as much antifreeze from the both
facings as well as remove any old gasket
material

here is the oem and the replacement - odd thing
i noticed was the the oem pump did not have
a seep hole, but the replacement did.

apply gasket sealant to the underside of the
rubber o ring then seat the ring in place. once
that is done apply additional sealant to the top
of the o ring and around the bolt holes just to
be safe, once again ensuring that no sealant
gets on the water pump fins

reinstall the water pump with the oem bolts and
reroute the serpentine belt and wah lah your
done.

hope this helps some peeps

Good write up  It will probably help a few people on hear. It seems so basic, but usually the easy things are the ones people are afraid to ask about, fearing the will look dumb.

Great write up. Need to replace mine as it has started to leak at 116K miles. Just called the local dealer and they want 242.00 (not a typo) for a OEM waterpump. Looked it up online with Advance autoparts, 55.00 - in stock and the seal is .99 where Dodge wants 5.99 for the seal. I know what I am doing tomorrow.

Pretty easy job really. Removed the Torque tube (air filter), used a 1/2 ratchet on the idle pulley and tied a ratchet strap to it and the other end to the frame and that kept tension on the idle pulley so I didnt have to mess with trying to hold the idle pulley and set the belt (since I was alone with this project). The hardest part for me was getting the old pump off...seemed to be stuck onto the block, but once it came off, it puked a lot of coolant out, so have a bucket or 2 under the front of your truck when you replace it. Other wise you will be known as the local cat killer in your neighborhood.

I installed a 180F last week, got the part number from a search here, was like $35 from local peterbilt shop. 3697195.

I like the results.

I didn't use sealant, T-stat has an O-ring. No leaks.

I thought the bolts were 8mm, someone check or I will tomorrow.

Good write-up!!

No pictures

I'm getting a message that the images aren't available anymore. Are others seeing the same? Also, I saw in the tech spec that the system holds 30 quarts. So, do I add 3 1/2 gallons of HOAT antifreeze and fill with water to get a 50/50 mix? Thanks.
