Ok done this before. Just lately truck seemed to not be as smooth as before so decided to check valve lash. This time I really tightened down on set screw so feeler was very tight - but used .008 intake and .018 exhaust. When I restarted everything there's was lots of white smoke and very very rough running ... .. Not sure what happened here ....

So have to do it again but wondering what I did wrong to make it run THAT bad ...,

Might of got them to tight. I set mine real tight too but on 10 & 20 gauges.

Probably too tight.
The feeler shouldn't be very tight. It should be snug but not loose or tight. It's always best to check after you do them with the over under method. If the size up feeler gauge doesn't fit and size down fits easily then you're good to go.

Yeah I did it real tight. Example intake.

Loosen locking nut , insert feeler .008 .. Tighten down adjustment screw until whole rocker was TIGHT and I couldn't pull out feeler easily at all. Then lock down the lock nut and really pull on the feeler to get it out. .

I did it thus way as it felt some of the rockers were looser than others .?

Thought woould be fine as the feeler was there to provide clearance ?

So what now ? Back them all off and just do it until they gently snug then lock down nut ?

Thanks

Any ideas why some rockers seemed looser than others ?

That's why I went with that approach as I thought it my be the source of a very slight sound I was chasing kinda like a tuning or exhaust flutter

Just so you understand what you are doing. By cranking them down to the point you have to force the feeler gauge out you are not locking in a defined clearance. You are moving the valve which completely changes the clearance to an unknown state. The procedure you performed may result in some loose and some tight, depending on the particular springs characteristics.

I did it the normal way previously. Only reason I did it this way was I thought a couple rockers a little looser. Than others . Thought with the feeler that was going to maintain my clearance.

Amazing how rough it ran like a extremely high powered and Lopey puller

Best way to adjust is not use the size you are going for, use one above and one below.

To get .008 I use .007 ans .009, 7 should going in easily and the 9 should not go in.

When you consider how many times those valves are opening per second, it really doesn't take much to throw things out of whack.

This makes perfect sense, too much pressure on the gauge and youre just forcing the valve to start opening.:agree2:

I always torque the nuts down to spec with the feeler gauge in place.
