Hey all,

I am in need of some urgent help, if anyone has ideas please let me know.

I just replaced my VP with a unit from Thoroughbred. Their 18 month warranty unit that is said to be rebuilt in their shop in Louisville, KY. Truck was running just fine before the VP install, save for dead pedal and the P0216 code - so I figured with 210,000, it was time.

Anyway, with everything back together, lines bled, the truck will start and sounds normal for maybe 5 - 10 seconds. During that time, the throttle works, truck sounds good, etc..

After that short period though, the "clatter" sound noticeably changes, and it starts running rough. Unstable idle. If I try to increase RPM, it just starts running REALLY rough at that point. After a bit with no throttle input, it will start to run a little better, but still not a good idle at all. I let it run for a while, and it never got better, actually the truck just died.

I then tried rebleeding the lines - cyl. 1, 3, 4, 5. 2 and 6 just are tough to reach.

Still same thing after that.

-Not throwing any codes
-15 psi fuel pressure while all this is going on.
- IAT shows 98 degree - which seems odd to me - it's not that warm out, and motor isn't warm either. - Could the IAT be causing some weird issue?
-water temp is showing about 100 after I've run for a bit.
-Not seeing excessive smoke from pipe.
-Can't see any leaks while truck is running (injector lines etc).

I've had the VP out before when I replaced that seal on the side of the block, and when I reinstalled, bled lines, I had no issues get truck back running again pretty quickly.

I need to get to work tomorrow. Anyone have any ideas?

Read closer Off-road he said it wasn't throwing any codes... To me it just sounds like you got a bad reman pump. Give thoroughbred a call tomorrow and see if they will help you out.

Stuff happens. You have to understand that, give them a call and see what they will do.

Yeah I know crap happens. I have a racecar. That's enough crap by itself.

Have a race next weekend in Memphis. This new VP44 was supposed to be my "guarantee" to make it there and back with no tow truck.

It sure seems odd though that it runs just fine when it first starts. What would be changing to cause this?

Is it possible somehow the pump gear moved a tooth? I was careful in the whole process, but I guess if it was way off it would cause issues. Then again, it shouldn't run well at all ever, not even after starting it if that was the case.

This is one key reason I only buy from vendors that get VP44 supplied from a certified Bosch rebuilder. It takes 3 hours on the test stand to calibrate each pump and then flash the PSG with new software after the calibration. As for shops that just rebuild then rebuild and re-use the the old PSG and never calibrate the pump again.

I know both Vulcan Performance and DAP both sell Industrial Injection pumps which is a Bosch rebuilder with a Bosch 815 test stand for calibration.

The only sensor required to be present to run the engine is the crank/cam. You can start the engine without a APPS, MAP, IAT, etc.

If you are running and then it goes to the clatter, you are running out of fuel. Where and why I do not know.
Air leak, or tank low?

Hit the nail on the head. Had a stoppage in the fuel line. Fixed, and now it's running perfect.

So Thoroughbred didn't cause the problem, to be clear. I did ask if they were Bosch certified, and I thought the answer was yes. I'll have to ask again.

Thanks for the replies all

Cheers. Time for some beers.

Piece of paper towel used to keep contaminants out while wrenching. Also acts as a fuel damper apparatus. Or maybe emergency fuel filter? :blues:
