Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
I would like to get some advice from you guys on purchasing a used truck.. it's at a high end used car dealership, they have very good reviews, and dont sound shady and are very accommodating over phone..
Car fax is clean, 1 owner. They said they took it to a ram dealer and had them go through it, all came back good and they said they will show me the work order from the dealer. All scheduled maintenance up to date.
2014 mega cab 4x4 Laramie all black..182k miles
Fully loaded, with the black out package..
In pics it looks in almost excellent condition..
The salesman did a walk around with me over the phone, and all he said there was, small rock chips on the front grill\bumper area, and around the fender flares.. said their detail shop will touch up what they can before i go see it..
They are asking $36k, but over the phone, got them down to $34k...
They are a few hours away from me, but will go see it tomorrow..
What do you guys think on that price with miles and condition?
It's in line with blue book value..
I'm in northern California, so pricing are elevated a bit...

How bad do you need a truck?

That price seems way to high IMHO. You're almost at 200K miles.
I would wait it out a few more months, a couple more rate hikes and you'll see prices start to sink.

Deleted since a long time ago and a G56 with a good clutch and service/vehicle history, I could talk myself into the $30k+ range…. Maybe.
Used car dealer, no previous owner history (except car fax which says nothing about how it was cared for), emissions in tact and a slush box, would turn me off.

Back to want vs need and budget and the fact that prices have leveled off, and already coming down are other things to think aboot.

Things are slowing down. I’ve been window shopping for a new (used) half ton for work.
Watched a fully loaded, 20k mile, black Trailboss with the 6.2 engine go a month before selling. Was advertised at $50k.

Not apples to apples but that was a fairly unique and very desirable truck that didn’t fetch mega dollars.

Dude. In this market, get off the damn internet and get it. We live in a world where gen 1’s trade between 10 and pushing 20, 2nd gens anywhere between 12 and 25 or more, 3rd gens 20 to 35. All clean and typically sub 150k miles. Gen 4’s between 25 and 45 and up since the ‘19 and newer gen 4’s trade north of 60.

If it’s clean, and I mean clean, the price isn’t bad.

I've been looking for a few months, and around here, it's either been older trucks that are in ok shape, higher miles (mostly 200k range),priced way over blue book, or newer trucks like '16s '17s, but but they're closer to $60k.. and they are still pushing around 100k miles..
I don't want to finance or take on a big financial hit... I feel like in my price range, I'm in like no man's land-nothing to great and gonna take a hit on one thing or another....

I would take them up on looking at the WO and see what was checked out, especially all e-equipment, turbo and trans. I would want it all stock, these days. Make sure it's enough truck for what you will be doing, payload etc.. I'm not used to these prices but it sounds OK, if the truck is in good enough condition.

I have a 16 w 150k on it. In the past 20k I've rebuilt the front end pretty much from unit bearing to unit bearing. I drive the hell out of it and have no concerns driving all over w it. At 180k I'd try and get what the dealer noted. I'd look for signs of wear/parts replaced. 34k sounds responsible but you will be replacing some parts soon if they haven't been done yet. Also look for rust in the wheel wells/underside/rockers. Try and get some type of warranty that will cover stuff for at least 30-60 days. That way is the dpf is full 20 miles from the dealer you have some recourse. Some people may think it's high but considering it's 80-95k to buy a nicer model now, 34k is reasonable.

What ever you do leave your self a lot of money for repairs, all the good miles are gone, somebody got rid of it for a reason.

I bought my 12 in 17 w/116k miles for 32k... and it was a cream puff. The next year the vgt went and in another year, it was the front end, carrier brg, brakes and all the u joints. None of that was a surprise and I do all my own work, so only the turbo was expensive. I'm still very happy bcuz I know what I have and it's been a great truck, ever since.
I just worry about all that stuff hitting guys that don't realize what can happen. You're looking at an 8 year older truck and over half and again the miles. Just be aware and be ready!
My truck usage is infrequent and it has plenty of down time for me to work on it. I also worry about guys that can't withstand the down time... consider that too.

I think the price is OK but agree w having money for the issues that pop up (they always do). Now is a crappy time to buy a car. We just purchased a new Subaru for my wife, we needed a car bad and we're initially looking at used ones but they were so over priced it was actually better to buy a new one. Like actually 4k less for the same car 2 years old. It's crazy, if you need a truck, your gonna pay for it now. I payed 53k for my 16 Laramie. A comparable truck now is 89k. 3 years ago 34k would be high, but that was then, and now it's a totally different deal.
Totally have money set aside for the little surprises that will come with high mileage.

I‘d certainly not snooze on the truck.

Not sure how long they’ve had it in inventory.....but I highly doubt it’ll be on the lot end of day Saturday at the price you stated.

They are holding it for me for tomorrow while they do some tlc on the paint chips.....
i don't know how long it was in inventory, but i have been looking for a few months..i only saw it on this post Monday...
I'm going to see it in person tomorrow... I'll report back with what i find..lol

Unfortunately this is the world we now live in, high mileage and high prices. I picked up my 2014 with 101k mikes for $34k and feel like in todays market I got a great deal. I had been looking for a long time.

It is. These forums are full of doom and gloom guys. For what reason? Who knows. The same folks that think fords are the greatest thing ever and they “just bought the engine”

Can’t say without knowing everything that you likely won’t know either. Mainly what has or hasn’t been repaired or replaced.
Could be it’s up to date on everything and most all the common wear parts have been replaced recently or it could need all kinds of repairs in the near future.
You could spend $500 or $15,000 in the next 20k miles would be nice to have an idea which end of the spectrum the truck is on.

Also how many miles and your use matters. As much as whether you’re a retail guy or diy for repairs.
But yeah if you’re buying a high mile truck just do your homework and hope physical condition is an indicator of mechanical condition.

So,i didn't buy the truck.. not knowing it's history was what changed my mind the most.. Plus, it had allot of small paint chips on the front end grill, bumper, and all the fenders... The exterior was not as prestine condition as the pictures led to be ..
I am looking at another truck and would really appreciate your input ..
It's a 2008 2500 mega cab Laramie, 4x4.. 164k miles. Firm on $27k.. Won't budge.
Overall it's in good condition, driver seat has a small tear, and tailgate has a dent..
2nd owner and has allot of maintenance records.. Few weeks ago, new brakes and rotors all around, new batteries.
Within the past 2 years, front end components replaced, new ac system,u joints..a few other odd and ends.. And transmission replaced, still has 1 year unlimited mileage warranty left..
Tires have good tread left...
What do you guys think? Good deal or over priced?
