hey guys, got me a first gen and need to make it a work truck. d250 so 2wd with 114k miles. was considering 4wd conversion but id rather spend that money on a solid tran rebuild/upgrade. modded the pump and tuned it with a denny t fuel pin and air filter. next are HD coils in front and another leaf or two in back. where should i go from here? thinking about 2nd gen 12v injectors and making the trans a lot stronger (not slipping or anything yet). proabbly going with 31" ATs. any advice would be much appreciated. i ship out next week so i wont be on here for two months :banghead::doh:. thanks in advance

Those 2nd Gen injectors won't work. Check to see what turbo housing you have, if it's still the stock one it's a 21CM a good upgrade would be a 16cm.

Kinda depends on what kinda work your plannin to do with it. A flatbed is awesome for work but there again it will still need to be set up for your uses. Ie dont need a 12ft flatbed for pullin gn's all the time. Give us some more info so we can give our free advise lol

thanks for the turbo advice. mostly for highway miles (not work) and farm work so a good amount of bed load between hay dirt and rocks and probably hauling some farm equipment

needs air bags, and reliability. Id just do as much maintenance as she needs (if it needs a trans do a trans) and throw some air bags on it and mud tires out back.

hx35 with V band exahust (not cast elbow) will really make it snappy and is a direct bolt in, i had one on mine but got a he351 now but that requires a lil work and fabing. also if you haven't already turned the afc star wheel that will make it much more responsive, along with full power screw adjustment for all over power. I've also found first gen 5x.012 (about a 90hp) for $400 which is a good deal. your best trans upgrade would either be a 5 speed swap or swap in a 47rh from a second gen (but you will need starter and flywheel housing cause converter is thicker) so you can get a lockup the stock 518 doesn't have a great track record in stock form. it all depends on goals and most importantly your budget, the sky is the limit!

good tip with the air bags, commute from nj to mass where I go to school so trying to stay away from mud tires which is what my jeep is rockin. turned everything up on the pump and tuned it where it's using all potential fuel. thinking about keeping the auto trans... not sure on that yet. has anyone wired cab lights for their first gen? roof is double layered and I couldn't wire them good so patched the one hole and called it a night lol

There was a post not to long ago where someone added cab lights, I think they said the wires are already there for them. Just use the google box at the top left and i'm sure you'll find something.

hx35 from a 2nd gen? a donor is just as good as new I presume. still new to the game so could someone advise/against stacks in my situation? it's a reg cab so my initial thought was against them for noise reasons but I love em. it would lessen room in the bed which is the reason I'm using to stop
myself now... turbo or injectors first? great advise on holding off till my trans needs it

those first gen injectors are from a non IC? I think i read that those are larger. for some reason cummins parts (and cummins in general) are so hard to find in nj and its killing me... for the exhaust, my buddy who advised against stacks can make me a straight pipe since that's what he has on his second gen

You have to use injectors from a 91.5 to 93, with the miles you have on your truck your injectors are still good. Usually need to replace them around 200,000 miles.

I would advise against stacks, you loose bed space and there was a "hay haulers" thread people seemed to think stacks lead to trailer fire some how or another. Bottom line theres no place for stacks on a work truck they do nothing for performance and hurt hauling ability. look into a 4 inch kit from diamond eye they can be had relatively cheap Or buy a down pipe and get some one to make you a side exit exhaust.

yea I knew I couldn't have stacks, on a future truck hopefully. I'll look into that lift, hard to find anything for a first gen 2wd despite what some
threads say. went to my local suspension place. they do good work but charge 85 an hour... buying HD coils from them and adding a leaf (or two?) in back. also there are load dampening coils on my rear, should I even bother replacing those? guy at the suspension place shrugged it off, didn't know if he was just being ignorant

I'm installing some 5716s in the front of my truck and a air lift system in the back, I have a lot more weight than you but if I were you I do air bags in the back so when you haul so ething heavy just add more air and keep a nice ride when empty

I have air bags on the back of both my trucks, it's nice you can have a load on and never even look like it. It's nice also when your pulling a trailer.

When I ran wire's for my cab lights I used a wire coat hangar and fished it down by the side post to get the wires to the top of the roof. It's kind of a pain.

silverado, old ram, so do you guys thinking buying a small inboard cab compressor and running air bags in the rear and only adding one leaf compared to two? or could I even only add air bags? rear leafs are in good shape just needs new shocks, front coils need replacing I believe. fingers crossed that air horns are in my future for this summer so if I went air bags id get a decent sized compressor
