Turbo advice needed

2312 Views 20 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  blacksmoke83
I just bought my first cummins a couple months ago and love it dearly, but I'm having some serious EGT problems. The PO put a HTT HTB2 on it with a fuel plate and 80hp injectors. Timing is advanced, everything done right. On the street it is an absolute monster, I swear it'll stop the earths rotation.

I tow a large camper and boat and even running the plate 1/2 back I can barely touch the go pedal without my EGTs going through the roof. On a hill last weekend I was down to 45 mph in 4th letting it scream and still running 1100 degrees, and in 5th it would bury the guage and almost sound like the compressor was surging. It's frustrating to have the power and not be able to use it. I can't afford to go twins, so does anyone recommend a good single that would get my temps down? So far I'm not sold on my turbo at all. I was right at 12000 on the scales if that helps.

What are the specs on your turbo? Sometimes it's better to use a slightly smaller turbo for towing.

Is that part throttle egts or WOT? Do you know for sure where the timing is at? What is the size and cone angle of the injectors? How much boost? Check for boost leaks?

Sounds like a tunnig issue. Too much pre boost fuel? Have you tuned the afc
What sized charger is an ht2b?

Part throttle EGTs, if I floored it I could roll the guage over. I'm not sure on the injectors, they came with the truck when I bought it. I don't think they are good injectors, the guy got them off eBay. Towing I was running 15-20 on the hill when I backed out of it. Floored empty it'll hit 40 easy at 1200*

When I turned it down to tow the camper I backed the star wheel off quite a bit. It actually lags pretty bad below 10 psi and won't smoke at all. Before it would black intersections out and rip my arms out of their sockets.
honestly doesn't sound like your truck is tuned poorly. Temps are warm but I don't know.

HTT HTB2 is a 62/65.

I never had heat issues quite like you describe when I towed with a very similar setup. I could hit 1200-1300 on long mild grades going 75mph running very similar pressures with a GVW of 16000+lbs

WOT was similar EGTs too. 1300+ WOT

What is your timing set to?

As an aside where if the f*** does HTT get off justifying putting a base 62/65/14 at $1750 and a 62/65/12 for $2250!! Doesn't even come with a downpipe. Man, what is this world coming to... geez

Injectors can make or break you.

Holy crap I never noticed that...$2250!
Just for fun, after I read your post I looked at ATS's website...a 71mm Aurora 5000 WITH downpipe, I/C pipe and clamps/hardware is $2247. Way more turbo than a 62/65/12 and $3 left over for a coffee.

Goofy, I would try to confirm what the PO says he did. Did you know this guy?
I would check the timing, see if you can measure the turbo wheels. I would look at some different injectors, there are some great builders on this forum who could set you up nicely.

even an aurora 5000 is grossly overpriced for that price. Where did these prices come from?

Apparently I haven't been paying attention to this sort of thing for a while.
My first fix will be new injectors and I'll see what happens. Does anyone recommend a different turbo if I'm still not happy with it? And honestly recommendations on injectors would be cool too. All of my buddies drive gas trucks with the exeption of a duramax so I don't have anyone to give me real world advice on the cummins parts
On a side note, the previous owner showed me a link to the injectors he put in it. They are reman and give no specifics to the nozzles, so I'm not feeling too confident in the quality. The ad is on eBay, says 3 mpg gain and good for 400 hp with no smoke. Mine smokes all the time... Cold at idle is terrible.

Infinite performance, DFI, DAP, CPP, and there's probably a few more I'm forgetting.

It sounds like your truck is running the same way my 12 valve did with 370 marine injectors in it. The spray angle of the injector does not match the piston bowl and they smoke bad and run hot.

I had almost the exact same turbo and fuel setup as you. There are a thousand ways to skin this cat, but I got a set of Dynomite Diesel 90 horse injectors to replace the 370's and I set my timing at 16.5° at 2200 feet elevation with the star wheel two full turns in from stock. I ground my own fuel plate and left it in the factory location.

I was running a 4" turbo back exhaust and an S&B Cold air intake with 191 delivery valves and 3KGSK

My EGT's stayed right around 770° while cruising 70 empty. Towing they would stay bellow 1450° as long as I kept the RPM's over 1700, if I dropped bellow that RPM it would start climbing on the EGT gauge.
With my 62/65 and 5x.o12s from DAP I manage to tow without a fuel plate and easily keep the egts under 1100

You mean the injectors from the diesel dude? (the +3 MPG rang a bell :hehe:) I had them a while back, nasty white haze at idle...I didn't much care for them, but they aren't the worst injector out there. BigBlue24 got them from me and went over them, I think he said they are 5x.012 VCO 155°.

The 5x.014 SAC 145° I had from DFI ran cleaner in every aspect and made noticeably more power. But I'd say a 145° 5x.012 would be good for you, or possibly a 7x.010.

BTW, thanks blacksmoke83. I creeped some of your posts and learned how to do the degree sign.° (shift/alt/8 on my Mac or hold alt+248) Looks better than using the little butthole thing. *

Much easier on an iPhone. Just hold down the 0.

DAP 5x012's is what I run. So for so good. Don't haze at idle unless its super cold. Run pretty clean. In hind sight I would have gone with 5x.014's but talk to jkidd on here.
Yes they are diesel dude injectors, I think I'm going to have to go with DAP 5x.012's! We had some close to 0 temps this morning and it was almost embarrassing with the amount of smoke my truck was puking once it actually started
