Guys, I am curious if any of you guys have had experience with installing/using a tuner or programmer (like the Edge Juice with Attitude for example) on a truck that currently has the check engine light on? Particularly the check engine light for a failed boost controller... I want to replace the turbo and will soon as I can but in the meantime can I get a little more juice out of the truck with one of these tuners? The turbo I intend to purchase will greatly benefit from having one of these tuners installed anyway but will installing it before replacing turbo gain me anything? Will it damage the truck?

If your turbo is T.U. Adding fuel isn’t going to help. It’ll just make the exhaust temps higher potentially which could in theory lead to a blown motor.

Fix what is broken then tune.

Additionally, look into the smattering of tuners here that work with EFI, EZLYNK, MM3, etc before going with something like a box tune.

Final thought is you didn’t mention if you’re deleted. If not (which it sounds like you aren’t) your tuning options are limited to emissions intact tuning unless you shed all the emissions equipment. Don’t run an emissions removed tune on an emissions intact truck.

Good luck!

Thanks! That's what I was thinking but just wanted to toss it out there.

I think you caught me mid edit. I added the “final thought” to the original.

If you have other questions fire away!

I definitely did catch you mid edit... haha. This is a bone stock truck so at this point I am trying to stay within emissions standards and just squeeze a few more ponies out. While I have ya I was wondering thoughts on turbos. I have been looking at "drop in" replacements like the BD screamer, the fleece Cheetah, and the sinister diesel bulldog series I think it's called. Taking emissions deleting off the table for the time being... what are my best options?

Not sure if any of those allow factory emissions equipment/factory tuning. At least from what I’m reading about the Fleece unit, it says aftermarket tuning and “off road exhaust” required.

I’ll let others chime in who have more experience with that side of the house.

Were it me I’d go with a reman stock unit if I planned on keeping the rest stock.
