im looking for an on the fly tuner for my 2003 250hp engine. i have a smarty s-06 right now and i know it bumps up the hp to 305hp (2004 hp level) then adds the tune

any other tuners do that for this year??

havnt done anything with smarty besides flash my truck with one to see how it was for a bit, but cant you just load a tune and then use the (not sure what its called pod setting?) power lvls on that tune to reduce the power on the fly and then raise it back up whenever you want? So basically shift on the fly

No it only changes throttle sensetivity bringing on the fuel faster or slower

My smarty is about 4yrs old so idk if I can add the POD settings or not. Im guessing that smarty must be the only tuner to give these 03s the extra hp. I guess I'll just stick with it, sure be nice to switch power levels on the fly.

As I stated before you can not switch power levels on the fly its for throttle sensetivity and you can download the pod function of the mads websight

There were several tuners for the 03 CRs! I started with a DS stack cuz smarty was still having problems. I used it for 5 years and really liked it til I got tired of updating and downloading from the DS site, no real change on the fly and lack of power choices between 100 and 170 hp. I wanted away from downloaders so I got the PMCR. Now I have individual adjustment for hp, tq, rp, timing, turbo cooldown, egt and boost limits, twins programs and a setting for etests. Its all true change on the fly, does boost fooling and has gauges in a tiny control module. The PMCR looks at Boost as part of the fuel control which makes it sterile clean on the bottom end and throttle response is more like a stocker. I guess that's why its not so popular. The Predator had lightning response but it would also turn the world black with a heavy foot. I've seen several posts from guys who tried the Predator and Smarty and they said the Pred was stronger and now I know how much stronger the PMCR is than the DS. I only turn the PMCR up half way (all 5s) and it's faster than any of the DS stacks. Just saying... Craig

thank you Cshomer thats the info i was looking for. I understand how the smarty POD works with the throttle response but do you actually have to use your smarty to connect to the truck or is there any switches or knobs

Yes you have to connect your smarty to change the PoD. You can however use a Edge Insight CTS to control the PoD.

I have never messed with PoD though. You can control power with your right foot better.

What problems was Smarty having? I've run Smarty since it was first released for the CR and don't recall any problems?:confused013:

The PowerMax and Smarty used to be the hot ticket stack for all-out power, but ultimately the Smarty tuning evolved to where stacking wasn't needed. I never got to run the TST on either of my trucks, but it's a good unit from everything I've ever read.

My TST isn't stacked with anything. It's a chip that plugs into sensor and injector connectors under the hood. I might try stacking with a smarty someday to see if I can get a little of the response back but without smoke. For now, I'm very happy cuz I bought a Jeep for running errands, etc. and the truck stays in the garage til I go camping. I have all the response I need for towing.
Every time I thought about buying a smarty I'd read about someone who had problems... I don't remember the specifics. I've bought a lot of things from TST and I've talked to Mark for many hours, about anything and everything, from his Purdue class projects to his dad inventing the PT fuel system. Mads used his shop/dyno to develop the smarty and the PMCR made more power. That could be old news from smarty early days, I don't know, but Mark also sells smarty and he has some customers that their ecms got trashed. So we talked more about response, smoke and touchy throttles and that's when he told me that the PMCR looks at boost to keep the bottom end clean. That was what swayed me his way.
We took a long trip with the 5er right after I got the PMCR and I got on a long stretch of flat road and set the cruise and started playing with the tuning. I found a combination that really dropped the egt and the overhead mpg went up immediately. I always hand calc every tank the real numbers proved the results. I gained a solid 2 mpg towing. I went from 12 to 14 towing my 15k lb 5er and I haven't seen 14 towing since I had a 10k lb 5er. I wont trade the change on the fly for anything, now, but I might supplement it with a smarty someday!
In case anyone needs more info on the Pred, I need to clarify some things. The 100/econ tune is very clean and it's a healthy power boost. It's also a PERFECT tow tune with a better turbo... good mpg, has some tq mng't down low for stock clutches/trans and max egt was 1225 with my truck. unfortunately the next steps are 170 and up and the throttle gets crazy touchy and it's HARD to keep clean in town. There's some really nice stacks with the puck and the canned tunes in the pred that do as well as the custom tunes that have to be down loaded from DS. Craig
