So I have read up about mods, and an easy one was to remove the silencer ring in the turbo. I tried this and took it for a test drive, and the turbo seems to not spool correctly and sounds like it has a tri-whistle to it (like 3 whistles at slightly different tunes).

I feel like with the silencer ring in, and the way it's designed, it seems to flow much better... or am I wrong?

When I took mine off it just made the turbo louder. You fully removed the silencer ring and retaining clip right? I don't think that there is anything you can screw up when removing it unless you don't reattach the intake correctly.

I love mine removed. With my 4" exhaust with a muffler, if I get on it all I can hear is the loud turbo and I love it! :party018:

Not at all, in fact I felt as if my turbo spoiled quicker. Have you checked for boost leaks?

I think i've read that it doesn't make a difference in performance at all.
Basically all show and no go. Some people are like that.:hehe::stirpot:

Im just posting my personal experience. I also rebuilt my turbo when I removed the ring, so that could help. Basically if you like the noise it makes, keep it off. If you don't, put it back on.

there is a post....somewhere deep in this site.

removing the ring only aids in noise, it ACTUALLY showed a decrease of 40hp ( roughly) on several dyno pulls.

the added turbulence from the ring being removed isn't beneficial in any way...
think airfoil on the late 80's-early90's TPI gm motors.

is 40hp noticeable....probably not while driving, and most dynos dontload enough to show 99.999% accurate numbers any how, so a dyno showing of less HP, is probably like 20hp on the street...to marginal to matter.

Personally to me im willing to lose the 20hp for the turbo noise haha

if you're feeling a loss of power with it removed, [shouldn't feel or notice any difference at all] check your intake pipes so they're connected properly. no leaks. happened to me when i did mine before i put the turbo filter on.

I feel like this is solely a personal preference mod. For me I prefer it removed. All the aftermarket turbos I have installed did not have a silencer ring so I figured it would do no harm taking mine off.

20hp-40hp is significant in my opinion. I'm curious to see the results on that. On a 215hp motor that would be a 18.6% drop in power which can be butt dyno proven.

I would like to see the dyno results because I doubt you lose 20 hp from taking a small piece of metal off.

i am currently working an outage, so my time is limited.

I would start by goggle searching, as it may have been a link to Comp D...

I recall it being a 3rd gen truck, but I also recall the 40HP number.

I will see if I can dig it up.

I noticed absolutely no difference at all. Just more turbo whistle.
