i have been all over the internet and haven't found anybody with the same symptoms as i've been having and im sorry the post is so long but i want to make sure that everything is in there. because well sometimes its the little things that matter when diagonose.

so for the past few weeks my truck has been having a nasty fuel problem. my thought were the fuel filter bein old and dirty.

going down the road it would almost die out at the top of the gears(in 3rd gear at say 2000 rpm or 35MPH) and WHITE SMOKE. the only way to keep accelerating was to up-shift into forth and then it was fine. no more dieing out or smoke. then the same for 4th gear as well at 45MPH.

now it wasn't an everytime occurance either. it was sometimes when it was cold maybe once or twice while accelerating. sometimes when the motor was warm while accelerating.

about 3 days ago it actually died going down the road in 4th gear then wouldn't start again. it would crank hard all day and even almost turn over every now and again. i cranked on it for about 15 minutes and got it to run at idle for about 20 minutes then it died. then finally no start at all.

so i changed the fuel filter. i didn't however fill the filter up because i didn't have any new clean fuel to put in it. was that bad?

after chaning the filter it still cranks hard and wants to turn over but it just wont. since then i tried to bleed the high pressure side of the fuel lines. i used the banjo bolts on the side of the injector only before watching a video explaining how to do it and that you use the fuel lines themselves. anywho, i did get fuel from the banjo bolts on the injector but only from the 1-3 clyinders. the 4-6 cylinders were not getting fuel.

so this is where im at now. the truck would die out while accelerating and white smoke. it died. then changed the fuel filter. still wont start. fuel to the front 3 cylinders and not the back 3.

Most people that install a pressure gauge put it where the bleeder is after the filter.

You could use a vacuum/fuel pressure gauge that you should be able to pick up at any parts store. Or get a fitting and a fuel pressure gauge and hook it up permanent.

Since you don't know where your bleeder for your filter is and you didn't fill your filter before you tried to start it then that explains why it won't start.

When you tried to start it with no fuel in the filter you pushed most of your fuel out of the fuel system and left a big air pocket in the IP.

The bleeder for the filter is right above the filter in the end of the banjo bolt, uses a 10mm wrench to open it or a metric adjustable wrench. Just open it about 1/2 turn then do as I explained in the link above.

After the filter is full close the bleeder turn your key to on and open the nuts on the injectors about 1 turn. Then pump the LP like you did with filling the filter until you have fuel coming from a injector then close that one. You may have to bump the engine a little to be able to get fuel from all the injectors.

When you have fuel to the injectors try to start it, if it doesn't start on 2 cranks then you'll have to bleed the injectors again. This time open all of them and crank the engine over until you see fuel and close the nuts as you see fuel.

I take it this is your first diesel?

got it running.

yes it is my first diesel. and sorry for the late responce after i got it into the shop i didn't have acess to the internet to reply but i got it running. i bled the system as you stated and to no avail.

so i started to replace the fuel shut off solenoid and i started with the relay. once i replaced the relay i gave it a 2 cranks to see if i that might be the fix and save me from replaceing the solenoid and it was the relay..

there was a set of relay's on the DS fenderwell. according to some of the other posts i was reading about it was a common problem so i ordered the relay. i dont have the part number on hand but it was the 2 relays farther back. i replaced both of them. and supposidly one of the relay's was suppose to be the fuel shut off relay

The front relay is the ASD relay, the middle is the starter, and the one closest to firewall is the A/C. There is no relay for the fuel shut off solenoid. There is for the 2nd gens but not ours.

well the relay i bought onlibne was a perfect match for the starter relay and the A/C relay then. tyhe only other thing i did before that was replace the hot batter terminal because it was arcing and smoking during cranking.
