04 2500 325hp 6 speed. So the Friday before last I went to start my truck and it turned over fine but wouldn't fire. I had driven it about a week before and it ran fine. I filled up on my way home so I know it has fuel. I tried to start it several time but just wouldn't fire. When I turn the key to the on position I couldn't hear the lift pump run. I ordered a new lift pump (located on the back of the fuel filter housing) and just installed it along with a new fuel filter. Cycled the key about 6 times and I could hear the pump run every time but it still won't fire.

I opened the drain on the bowel and its empty. I pulled the line apart where is goes from metal to rubber and it pushed fuel out. I turned the key on and opened the drain valve on the bowel and nothing.

One thing I noticed is the pump makes a steady pulse sound and when I put my hand on it I can feel it run. I thought I remember the old one made more of a buzz sound.

Any help is much appreciated.

Did you replace the small pre-filter, in-line before the pump?
Did you try bumping the starter a couple times to make pump run 30 sec each time or just turn key on?

Try some "starting gas" (Ether) I dont know the english word.
If it starts and run you have a leaking injector so the high presure fuel pump cant build the correct rail pressure.

If it starts and dies its something else.

Yes I know I used a lot of spray, and I know its not recommended to use at all on a diesel.

I followed the line all the way back to the tank and there is no inline filter. When I turn the key on I don't need to pump the starter to make it run, it just runs. I thought it was only supposed to run for a few seconds then shut off when the key is in the on position. I have not tried ether.

If it runs continuously then the fuel pump is controlled by a added fuel pump relay, NOT by ECM.:wink2:

The pump RAN but NOT PUMPING fuel,IMO.
You have air in the supply line between the tank and pump, my guess.
Or the new pump is defective in not pumping.:wink2:

How do I get it fuel to the pump? Can I pour fuel into the fuel bowl?
Also I have not made any change to the fuel system from stock. Is the pump typically controlled by the ecm or just a relay?

The fuel bowl is after the pump so pour fuel there won't help.
You need to disconnect the fuel line from the pump inlet and suck the line until fuel comes out then reconnect the line to pump.

There were a couple years of truck (04 and 04.5?) that didn't use a fuel pump relay and the ECM drive the pump directly.
When this function fails the cheap fix (without replacing ECM) would be add a relay to drive the pump and control by a key RUN power source.

Did you own the truck since new?

I have not owned it since new. I believe im the second or third owner. But ive put more miles on it than the last owners combined. Any ideas as to how I can figure out if the "cheap fix" might be in place? The factory plug to the pump is in place and goes into the wiring harness.

2 pumps, try do bucket test out of truck to verify pumps, but sounds like air leak, pump will not prime , need to check orings/lines for leak or fault in fuel pick up in/on tank.
2 pumps? I'll try to run it off a fuel can and see where I get.

old pump and new pump =2 No??????
If the old pump is not intank then the old pump should be replaced with a new pump.
Why add a new pump next to an old pump?

Usually add a FASS or Air Dog underneath the truck, right?:grin2:

Like I said before I could not hear the old pump run when the key was on. So I bought and installed a new pump. Therr is only one lift pump in the system. There is fuel in the steel line where the rubber line that goes to the pump is. The rubber line is 16 to 18 inches max. How fast is the pump supposed to run?

IDK, never hear mine, but it is running.
there is no speed specified on pump, should supply 11.5 psi minimum to CP3 at idle
Roughly should fill bowl in about 3-5 seconds.
Bump key so starter turns 1-2 seconds leave key on should run pump for 20 seconds

Where would I look for a relay if someone did the cheap fix?

The relay would still have to be connected to wiring for lift pump, so try trace wires from lift pump to it. Usually in area of drivers side battery/fender for direct feed to battery.
I would check for ECM codes also see if issue
Key on key off 3 times in 5 seconds, dont start, leave on codes will show in odometer .

I cycled the key 3 times in 5 seconds and there was nothing on the dash. I also connected my smarty tuner and when I go to either get dtc codes or update ecm it says comm. Error time out.
