With the recent truck issues it became clear I needed a backup ride as my truck ages. Pondered several options and settled on one, a MINI R53. Monday I found one, purchased it and proceeded to get a trailer to haul it home. The one drawback was it was 150ish miles away and the only time to see it was Monday after work. So off I went at full speed, mpg be damned as time was important, not every mpg earned. Did 75~80 down, unloaded and 65~70 back loaded. Load was a light load with just the trailer (probably 1300ish #'s ???) and the MINI at 2700#. I'm guessing around 4k if that. Tuesday morning I had to roll on into work and returned the trailer. Continued the care free driving until I filled back up at the end of the day.

Managed 18.0x mpg with that load... not bad I think.... possibly could have been 19's had I behaved. (439,900+ miles now).

Also... zero starting issues since pump swap.

So why the MINI you ask?
  • Near unlimited support like our trucks.
  • Parts are dirt cheap and easily had in wrecking yards.
  • There are diy tuning options to fit the desire to learn how to tune a gasser
  • Drives like its on rails & is reasonably quick
The one I picked up needs a motor mount but is otherwise in great shape. With that in mind, been keeping it parked other than 1 show & tell drive last night until its ready for duty. That one extended drive showed me the light... I get it.

The support is there to get the p:w ratio down 10:1 and can go lower if really really wanting it to, quick = point A-B which also includes the twisties... the thing has more grip than anything else I've driven., Also it is small enough to fit both truck & car in the garage w/o issues.

I've owned a few track cars and plenty of other fast cars. So just ribbing on ya.

My truck is a winter beater/water hauler for a reason :).

I think "zippy" is the word your looking for. I've heard those mini's are a hoot to drive and you almost forget its fwd.
I've personally always wanted an old one with a motorcycle motor in as my daily. But then my wiser self tells me how a modded out 40-50 yr old vehicle probably isn't the best choice for a daily. Im still 16 when it comes to trucks/cars.

Tell us more on your setup to get that mpg.

mpg #s...its detailed in the 11 year makover thread here, google that phrase & my user name for a link.

on the mini... fixing an engine mount issue, preferred street version arrived today, used long tube header ships monday. spying a fuel cooler spot for when the time comes.

hard parts can add to the fun on this car with no programming required. a tune enhances output further though
