Had a P00AF and a P0003A code yesterday. They cleared themselves after parking and shutting the truck off for a while. They came back on a short trip today and I cleared them with my Edge CTS. As soon as I pulled out of the parking lot they came back and the truck dropped to 1000RPM. I was able to get it off the road into a parking lot and now I'm sitting here waiting on a ride.

I've read that these codes indicate a bad turbo actuator. I'm assuming I'll need to replace the actuator and turbo. If that is the case, what is the best aftermarket turbo kit to replace the stock stuff with that won't break the bank?

Also, I'm reading posts from a few other guys that are experiencing the same codes/problems. Could this be a manufacturer's defect, and if so, would my deletes negate any warranty on the actuator?

Not really a defect. Usage of the truck as a short trip commuter can contribute to soot building up. But it's not really limited to that.
You could grab a stock remain or a stock take off from someone who did a swap to a fixed blade turbo.
Yes your warranty is gone.

Did some research and I'm gonna have it towed to the shop Monday and get BD Rumble B kit installed to replace the stock junk that is widely known to prematurely fail. BTW my truck only has 23k miles.

I'm sure I will catch flak for this but it sure seems there are a lot more actuator failures in tuned trucks then stock? I'm wondering if some of these tunes are doing something (or not doing something like exercising the actuator enough)?

As far as warranty? Pretty sure you are on your own there.

As usual, you are the exception to the rule. Your truck is perfect in every single way. All of our trucks should be like yours, but unfortunately they're not. They are lesser trucks. I just cannot comprehend why our trucks aren't exactly like yours...

From the posts I've read here and elsewhere on the web, it seems about 50/50 on the failures. That's what leads me to believe it's a manufacturer defect. I'm more than cool with it coming out of my pocket. I can put quality parts on it that way.

Curious for my own info.... do you use the exhaust brake lots? What is the trucks normal everyday life?

Daily driver. About 80% in town. I rarely tow or have any real weight on it. I saw it squat for the first time a couple of weeks ago with a load of lumber in the bed. I run the EB if I'm on a divided highway. I do not run the truck for its intended purpose, but honestly that shouldn't matter. If I were running it harder than designed I could understand it. I believe the factory got a bad run of actuators and some buyers are the ones left holding the bag. I still look at it as and opportunity to upgrade, though. The cost of a reman VGT and the kit I'm gonna buy are about equal.

Ditch it. I drove plenty of tractor trailers in these mountains without one. A pickup truck shouldn't be a problem.

what is the relationship between use of the EB and the turbo actuator?

How does the EB work in the 3500 anyway? Is it just gearing down or doing something else? I use my EB by default when I tow in tow/haul mode.

The actuator is what controls the turbo vanes. Which Either controls the turbo when your driving or also provides backpressure to act as an engine brake. Turn mine on and leave it on every time I drive. From what reading I’ve done keeping it working helps it last longer. But I doubt that has the same effect on the actuator. Maybe somewhat but not as important as the vanes always moving to keep them from sticking.

Is switching from the vgt an upgrade? I love the eb and use it all the time. Once I start the truck it’s on. I get it they are expensive though.

The turbocharger on the current 6.7 Cummins is what is known as a VGT, variable geometry turbine. This turbo has vanes in the turbine housing that move to change the exhaust flow through the turbine housing, this makes the turbo respond quicker to changes in demand, and the vanes close up to restrict the exhaust flow to act as an exhaust brake.

The actuator is the motor that opens and closes these vanes.

The vanes can get carbon built up on them from soot, and coking of oil that may pass through the turbo, this carbon buildup can block the vanes, keeping them from moving when the actuator operates, this can damage the actuator, causing it to fail.

Using the exhaust brake often, and following proper shutdown timing when you stop, can help to keep the turbo vanes clear of carbon buildup, thus reducing the chance of actuator failure caused by jammed turbo vanes.

The actuators may also be failing for other reasons as well, such as electronic failure.

Is switching from the vgt an upgrade? I love the eb and use it all the time. Once I start the truck it’s on. I get it they are expensive though.
I'm just old school and prefer technology that has been prove to work and stand up through the years. The VGT may turn out to be great, but it just has too many moving parts for my liking. I also decided to add the BD remote exhaust brake while the shop has the truck. I'm also having them install ARP425 head studs, just in case.
