Hi all,

Long time reader, first time poster.

I'm looking at buying a third gen 2500 or 3500, crew or mega cab. Seems like a lot of trucks from that era have had a trans rebuild at some point. I've got my eye on a 2007 3500 that the current owner has had for 7 years. Looks like he's taken good care of it, lots of maintenance (intake, exhaust, EFI tuned for mpg, 08 steering upgrade, ball joints, deep sump trans pan and diff).

However, it doesn't sound like the injectors have ever been done, and no rebuild on the trans. Also needs a new carrier bearing and water pump, which I don't mind doing.

Are the transmissions in these trucks solid if they're well maintained, or would I be looking at a rebuild soon regardless? Truck has around 200,000 miles.

Thanks.

Yes they’re pretty solid if maintained and not beaten on. Absolutely plausible to have 200k and not been rebuilt. They aren’t the fragile junk guys like to make them seem.

I would suggest a one piece rear driveshaft, ditch the garbage carrier bearing. I did three or four bearings between my two trucks within a couple years and they’re spendy. But so is the one piece

What is the history of the truck? DD or HOT shot towing heavy frequently?

If you buy, pull the VB, either do a transgo HD2 kit or buy a good pressure increased VB. The extra pressure helps squeeze the clutch packs. Then when it does need refreshed you'll already have that taken care of.

The few weak points can be beefed up to make a stout and reliable trans. Plus, they are basic enough for a DIY rebuild

My advice is stay away from Certified Transmissions, Omaha NE Road Ripper 3000, and BG&S Transmission in Grand island, KS. Mine leaked from day one and they wouldn't warranty it because it had a cracked overdrive housing. $6200 out the door for a supposed rebuilt tranny. Lawyers wont touch it because not enough money involved. Long story. I an email you a word document of my experience. I could also have a separate post on it if this site allows.
