Hey everybody, i am having some problems with my transmission. when i get on it it will start to slip then will hunt for what gear to go into but won't figure out what gear to shift into, if i get it into overdrive it will shift but as soon as i slow down and try to throttle it or slowly go it still searchis for what gear. the only thing i can find is the alternator is overcharging... i have gone through all my cables and wiring and cleaned everything. i have a new battery temp sensor on the way....

with that being said if i shut off the truck then back on it still does it. If i change any of the tunes even back to stock it will still do it. If it sits for a day or two i can start it and it will run just fine until again i put alot of power to it then it does the part where it doesnt want to shift or find a gear. It also does it warm or cold.

Does anyone know if the alternator over charging cause that? Thanks for your help in advance.

2nd gens had issues with the OD hunt due to "noise" from the alternator to the pcm, as the voltage regulator was built into the pcm. havent heard of this issue on the 3rd gens. but if your alternator is in fact over charging, you should get that fixed regardless.

The overcharging won't effect the trans, the source of the overcharging might. Bad connections and grounds will raise havoc with all the electronics as will a bad battery.

The transmission issues can almost always be traced to the gov solenoid and transducer or a worn trans. The noise problem was solved with the 3rd gens and has never been an issue.

I would concentrate on the chrging issue and connection cleaning first and solve the overcharge problem then move to the trans.

thanks everybody for the answers. I have already cleaned all of my battery posts cables replace the bolts load tested both batteries. All are ok. I have ohm'd all the battery connections and all are ok. I replaced the battery temp sensor under the driver battery. Afterwards I started the truck and checked the alternator out put with a meter and it is pretty constant at 15 volts until it drops because of the intake heater then pops back up and can spike just below 16 then back to 15 volts. took the truck out for a test drive and still the same problem.... heres a little better description....

Start off from stop speeding up and get over 15 mph and its like the truck shifts to neutral. Then tries to find a gear then back to neutral. This time though it popped up a code... p0270

Going to get a new sensor tomorrow. its weird that it has never popped a code until now when I replaced the battery temp sensor.... ugg ha ha ha the love of electronics :banghead::banghead::banghead:

That won't effect the transmision. Sounds like you still have some issues on the engine.

On the trans, try the output shaft speed sensor first then the gov solenoid and transducer.

P0720 Low Output Speed Sensor – RPM Above 15MPH

Yes sir, that will definitely throw the TCM and trans into the twilight zone. ;)
