Yes, I've cleaned the cooling fins on all the coolers up front. No obstructions. I used to hear the fan at times really pulling air, sounded like a jet, but I haven't heard that much air movement in a long time.

So far, so good. I just pulled the camper home after a two hour drive and checked the pan temp when I pulled into the yard. 167 degrees. I'm glad I went back to the heat exchanger.

That heat exchanger needs to be on. If you disconnect the the hot water side it will cool the trans better. I would never remove completely unless I was adding another remote cooler. It sounds to me like your trans guy is trying to kill your trans so you'll come back for another. Also 200 deg is way too hot. it shouldn't go over 170 to 180 max!

I also found removing the factory cooler that's mounted to the intercooler/radiator is killing the radiators attempt at keeping things cool since it's blowing 200 deg air into it. How can we expect it to cool anything??? So I ditched mine and mounted an double stack trans cooler with a fan under the bed. So far it looks promising.

How can it cool better with no water going through it?

It does if you disconnect the water hoses and allow it to. More of a heat sink, but the general consensus is it's worth 5 to 10* drop in ATF temps.

The heat exchanger doesn't cool better with the water disconnected then. So 270* without it, 170* with it, or 260-265* with it and no water connected? The hot water cools it.

Ya, I think they had in mind to help warm up the trans in colder climates. I don't buy the notion that 220* water cools the trans fluid, because that's too hot. Nobody in their right mind wants trans temps over 200 deg... I like to see my trans temps around 100 to 120* and 170 max, at which point the fan on my aux cooler will kick in, or I can hit the over ride switch to keep it in check.

I just went through this here in this thread and proved it cools it. I went from 220-280 temps not even pulling a load down to 170 while pulling a camper. The only difference was having the heat exchanger connected. My water temps never reach 220. Usually 190 or so.

Well that's true in your situation.... if my trans temp was 270 then 200 deg water would help to cool it. I'm glad that it helps in your situation. But like I said I like my temps closer to 100 not 200 and i do not use the factory radiator mounted trans cooler either, I have found that the heat that comes off it causes high radiator temps...
