Did a filter change on my 08 with the 68re. After I did the filter swap and put 5 3/4 qts of ATF 4t in the trans the trans would only be in 4th gear and it would not shift up or down at all. I had to add another 2 1/2 qts of tranny fluid just to get the trans to shift somewhat normal. I put on around 50 miles on the truck and then pulled the extra 2 1/2 qts back out but the trans would not shift right and I needed to put the 2 1/2 qts back in to get it to shift right. The trans shifted right before I did the filter change so what went wrong? Would disconnecting the battery reset the computer so I can pull out the extra fluid and make the trans shift right? The tranny pan had (RTV)rubber gasket maker on it instead of the trans pan gasket the comes with the filter kit would that RTV get into the valve body and make for shifting problems? I did remove all the RTV from the tanny pan and use the gasket the came with the filter kit
Any advice would be appreciated.

5 3/4 quarts is not enough after a filter change. 8-10 in my experience before my deep pan was installed.
How much did you take out and how are you checking it with the engine running in neutral? Any DTCs?

OEM Mopar does not come with a gasket. You should be using Mopar.

I agree with the ‘should be about 8 quarts comment’. You need to check it running and in neutral.

You can use the gasket but you need RTV too. Using oem parts is good advice.

If the screw on filter came loose it could cause what you’re describing. Also, there’s a seal for the other filter if that’s not installed or sealing it will cause you issues.

Are you checking the fluid level before adding or removing the fluid? Start by checking and getting the level full. If it still shifts poorly it maybe a filter that isnt seated fully.

No DTC's. Pulled out 5 3/4 qts when I drained the pan and that's what I put back in. Check fluid while truck is in neutral with engine running and the fluid on the dipstick is 1 to 1 1/4 above the full hot dots on the dipstick with 8 qts in the trans

I just used the rubber gasket that came with the filter kit and there is no trans fluid leaks. I have been using the rubber gasket on my old truck with the 48re in it and it never leaked either.

I never used RTV on a tranny pan gasket and I never had a leak. I tightened the screw on filter hand tight and then took another 1/2 turn with a filter wrench. I also tightened the T25 screw good.

I'll guess I'll have to pull the pan off again and take a good look to make sure the filter is seated.

the filter has an o-ring around it. service manual says to look into the port where it presses in and verify the old one came out. if it came out, mount the new filter with the new o-ring and call it good. if not, it says remove the new o-ring and install the new filter with the old o-ring still in place, or CAREFULLY remove the old o-ring with a pick.

also, i think i recall @TransEngineer mentioning the threads for that t-25 being in plastic and cracking easily if over-torqued which could be causing a fluid leak. and unless you got a spin-on filter adapter with metal threads, you're mounting the spin-on filter to plastic threads as well. over-tightening the threads can strip them and cause leaks. i don't recall specifically how the manual says to tighten the spin-on so you may have done that correctly already.

any idea what your CVIs are? any way to check them? there are some trans service threads on here where it lists what the normal range of CVIs should be, if you care to do some digging and have a way to read yours. those would be a quick way to tell if the problem is the valvebody or just a fluid level issue.

I went back into the trans and found that the plastic O-ring was not seated properly. Originally I installed the screw on filter and the the pan filter and I tapped the O-ring in and it looked seated but I could only see part of the O-ring, the part I couldn't see did not seat in properly. I took the pan off and the pan filter and seated the O-ring so it was seated properly and all was good. :smile2:
