Trans needs to warm up if left sitting for a week..

Hi all,

Well, my father just got the deal of the century: a 2001 ECLB 2wd with 210k mile for just $2500

There are, however, a few small issues. Tailgate is damaged, dash pad is cracked to h377, and the tranny is finnicky. Other than that this thing is in really great condition.

If left sitting for longer than a week, the trans wont shift into gear unless the truck is left to idle for 10-15 mins. If you drive it atleast once a week, its perfectly fine. No slipping, chunky gear changes or anything.

Could this be a simple band adjustment? Or something more dire? The P.O. had the tranny flushed about 15k miles ago at the stealership, been doing this for over 30k with no sign of getting worse. Fluid level is sat.

Thoughts?

Forgot to add, its a 2500.

Mine does it too. Let it warm for 5 mins or so and take it in and out of gear a couple times and it usually catches

Next time try letting it run 30 seconds or so in neutral. The torque convertor will not fill in park causing delayed engagement. There is a check valve in the cooler lines that is supposed to prevent this but sometimes they stick open. Nothing to worry about if the trans works good otherwise.

Thanks. Is that check valve easy to get at and replace? Or is it internal? There are no other problem, like i said it was a great deal. Im definetly jealous of the old man :)
The converter is draining back and it probably has a worn pump if you want it fixed better get a full rebuild
Mine has always done this, even after the rebuild.
Then your trans was not rebuilt correctly it should not have drain back after a rebuild
Considering the price, my father is debating just getting an aftermarket trans. However, its not too much of a problem so we may just stick with letting it idle in neutral and then dealing with the trans if it gives more trouble. Thanks for the tips guys.
The drain back issue has nothing to do with the pump. The valve body design that goes back to the 60s is the cause. This is why chrysler transmissions require the fluid to be checked in neutral rather than park like most automatics. The check valve is in one of the cooler line fittings in the heat exchanger on the passenger side of the engine and/or in the cooler line near the radiator.
Got a part number or aftermarket replacement suggestion for the valve? Google has yeilded nothing for me.
Most of the time you can free them up by removing them and blowing compressed air through them. The only place i have found replacements is the dealership if you can get them to look up something "that old".

Check valve is in the front port of the heat exchanger and dodge is the only place I have found them. Mine does it only because I don't have the heat exchanger anymore not a big deal my valve body has full flow in park so I let it run for 20 or 30 seconds and am good to go

Thats just the kind of info i was looking for, thanks!
I removed this check valve in mine and added a shift kit to flow in park. Takes 30 seconds on startup to engage.
