Has anyone ever swaped an automatic for a 5 speed in a second gen. Is that too much trouble to be worth while?
I have seen my dad and brother do it in a couple of mustangs and it wasn't too bad, i wasn't sure if it would be a bad idea to look into doing it for my cummins.
I bought all of my parts on ebay. A guy parted out a 5 spd truck and included everything to do the swap. I paid $2200 for it and had several parts left over. The only other thing I had to buy was the oil.
I have to leave right now but when I get back I will get you a complete list of EXACTLY everything you would need.
Ok here are the parts you will need. If it ain't on the list, you dont need it! This is everything you need to make the interior look factory also.
Transmission
Bellhousing
Shifter, boots, and shifter trim console. Dash pocket that goes in place of the auto flip down cup holders. Trim on the steering column where the automatic shifter was.
Clutch and brake pedal. Just pedals, they will slip right onto the auto bracket.
Clutch master and slave cylinder
Clutch
Pressure plate
Flywheel
Flywheel bolts - these are longer than the auto flex plate bolts.
Throw out bearing
Clutch release fork
New input gear from a 5spd for your transfer case
Front drive shaft from a 5spd truck
Transmission soft mount from a 5spd.
Now for the wiring to make it all work. You take the Neutral Safety Switch plug from the old automatic trans. It has three wires. The two outer wires on it are your reverse lights and you have to attach them to the reverse plug on the nv4500 tranny. The center wire you have to run up to the Clutch Safety Switch. It will tap into one wire on the CSS and the other wire on the CSS is to be grounded on the firewall.
No ECM reflash is neccessary.
Hope this helps you and if you have any other questions please feel free to ask.
I took out the drink holders and sold them. There is a dash pocket that goes in place of them on manual trans trucks.
To take off the shifter you just have to remove the trim surrounding it on the steering column. It is held in by a tapered pin. Take a punch and knock the pin out, hit the pin from the bottom and knock it out the top. The shifter will just fall out.
I can't really say what your auto will be worth. Depends on mileage and condition. Just a guess I would say $600-800.
I sold mine for $2200 with converter but it only had about 5500 miles and was a Jasper rebuild.
