Tranny going out?

869 Views 10 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  MikeRodrig27
I have an 01 with a 47re and a couple days ago I started to hear and feel it slipping. It seems to be jumping in and out of gear, up and down rpm's. Won't shift out of first until around 2500-3k. Then after engaging 2nd and 3rd gear it seems to slip back out. I need a little advice whether it needs maybe a full rebuild or what?

When did you last adjust the bands?. The high revs to get it to shift out of 1st can be a front band issue. Whats the fluid look and smell like?. If it's stinking burnt then you have slipping going on and a rebuild is in line.
Check for codes in the PCM. a delayed first to second shift could be a faulty speed sensor.

RPMs Jumping up and down in 4th (is it doing it in 4th?) gear could be the torque convertor locking and unlocking repeatedly. This could be cause by a passenger neg terminal having a bad connection, or the alternator producing VAC electricity (blown diode) which would confuse the PCM. Check your other battery terminals also just, good preventative maintenance anyways.

These are two problems that I have had with my transmission with similar symptoms. Did these problems seem to occur almost immediately or did they slowly start to happen?
It just began to happen immediately. I'll double check the terminals to begin with. Really appreciate the help!

Ill second the battery terminals on the passenger side, had the same issue it was not staying in gear unless I was romping on it. As soon as I would be coasting it would start poping between the 2 gears it was closest to.

I would kick o/d off and it would still do it with 2nd and 3rd so that eliminated o/d as an issue.

Check the easy things first and move on to the harder things especially when the easy things are free fixes!
Well, I swapped out the terminals on the passenger side and now the slipping doesn't seem to be as extreme. Still slips in between gears, mainly 2nd and 3rd, and when I begin to ease off the throttle it seems to slip again. Any other suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Doing what I can to avoid a $2500 rebuild

it's hard to diagnose without actually seeing the transmission shifting. A video can say a thousand words about whats going on.

Can you take a clear video of the problems and the truck accelerating from a stop?
Sounds like solenoids and governor pressure sensor and service, not rebuild. It is common shifting problem with bad solenoid.
Went ahead and decided on the rebuild after further diagnosis. Going with redline clutches, kolene steels, shift kit, all new electronics, billet single disk converter. Running 100 hp sticks, edge comp and an hx35. I won't be running around doing boosted launches everyday so it should hold up.

Cool, hope you enjoy the new trans! I'm excited for the day that I can rebuild mine. I want a tigher convertor and a shift kit on mine. These things shift slow and soft stock.
