I have had my car hauler for about a year now and the guy I bought it from, I cant remember the reason had a 4 pin plug wired in instead of the 7 pin so the trailer brakes dont work, well I got a 7 pin plug and wired it in to have them work, and they didnt so I got looking at the wires and under the trailer going to the axle they are all unhooked, so I know thats a problem but my question is there is the controller box that the saftey cable goes to that if the trailer comes unhooked the brakes will kick on, the bottom wire to it runs back to the brakes for the trailer but the other wire is just hanging loose, does anyone know where that wire needs to go, Ill go snap a couple pics if needed. I pulled the tool box off the trailer and the wire was under neath it just hanging and there was a another wire there also that is spliced into the harness. Did these go to a battery, or do you even need a battery to power the trailer brakes any help would be nice thanks

trailer brakes are simple all they need is power and a ground. the break away box sounds like the ground has been torn loose. the box should be wired so that when the cable is pull the battery powered wire makes contact with the wire going to the brakes and engages them.

ok went and hooked up the other wires and with it plugged into the truck the trailer brakes are locked up this is with the wire still loose coming from the pull away, which the wire that is hooked up to the pull away is the + wire, so I am assuming that the other wire just needs grounded out then, which makes since, also the wire coming from the truck for the electric brakes is not hooked to anything on the trailer, does that need hooked up to control the trailer brakes or is this set up probably just a lock for trailer brakes incase the trailer is lost and thats it, i will go ground that wire out and see if it frees up the brakes on the trailer when plugged in, I just touched the wire to ground it must not have been good enough

ok hooked that up to a ground and still no go there locked up still, but I think my problem is, the power going to the brakes is the power coming off the truck so its always on locking the brakes up, I think i need to run a wire to the brakes from the electric brake pin off the truck and hook that up to the trailer brakes instead off the power wire, does this sound correct.

i also unhooked the other wire going to the pull away because it is t'ed in and it still wouldnt work, and looking at a diagram i found the way the pull away is wired, it is suppose to hook to a battery, so i think that solves that problem, just th problem of the electric brake wire is hooked to nothing, meaning my controller wont control them

This take this one step at a time.

The break-away switch has one wire from the trailer battery positive to the switch, then from the switch to the brake positive wire (usually in the 7-way). This allows the brakes to get full power if the switch plunger is pulled. You shouldn't have power to the brakes from this circuit except in emergency situations.

I assume all the lights are working so I'll skip that part of the wiring. I also assume that you have a brake controller and it's plugged into the harness under tha dash, so I'll skip that part as well.

There is a 10 pin connector located on top of the rear axle it's where all the trailer tow wires come to from the front.
Pin 1 is empty.
Pin 2 is light green - trailer right turn.
Pin 3 is white/light green - Backup lights.
Pin 4 is Red/Violet - Positive from battery to trailer > Pin 4 of 7-way.
Pin 5 is Brown - Parking lamps.
Pin 6 is empty.
Pin 7 is Dark Green - Trailer brake power from controller > Pin 2 of 7-way (most likely a blue wire there).
Pin 8 is Black - Ground > Pin 1 of 7-way.
Pin 9 is Black - Ground > Pin 1 of 7-way.
Pin 10 is Yellow - Trailer Left Turn.
