Yup, do the tranny. All performance mods are useless without a tranny that can take it.

The 48RE is not a bad tranny, it just has a few bad parts. I decided to build my stock auto instead of going full billet. I'm not running a ton of power, but I pull everyday. I can hardly wait to recieve my parts so I can get dirty.

Address the weak points and move on from there.

At least a torque converter, but it would be nice to get the tranny also. You might want to look into a dtt, copilot ,or ts shift enhancer if doing trans work isn't in the cards yet. Yes i would say it is better for you to now be looking at getting what you got to the ground befor you look for more power. Good luck!

If your messing with an mp8 I would pick up a lift pump and some better fuel filtration. That and trans parts will burn through 2k quickly.

Any of the fuels sytems will be good units. If you want a drop in place on that replaces filters and everything the airdog or fass are good units. If you want to make up your own filters or just re use the stock filter and only the filter, the Raptor is a good unit.

The valve body is kinda like the hydraulic brain of the trans. It controls the engagement and disengagement of each gear along with how tight the clutches hold it in a specific gear.

The aftermarket valve bodies are all just a little different , but the general just of it is the same. They increase line pressure witch holds the clutches tighter , and that allows the trans to better cope with more power. They shorten the time it takes for the trans to shift gears, witch means less slipping of the clutches , more of you power making it to the ground, and less heat build up in the trans. They may also adjust the shift points of trans, this is just fine tuning the trans for towing or racing maybe fuel mileage that is very brand dependent. Basically the stock trans was made to handle stock power levels when you up the power you are then over powering the stock trans and have created a time bomb. So to avoid this you need to upgrade the trans to handle your new found power, or pay the consequences. A aftermarket valve body is kinda like a programmer for the tranny.

I too did upgrades for towing my 5th wheel camper this spring, best upgrade that I did was the Exhaust brake. Wow what a difference now driving out west in the mountains, flip a switch a now going down hill isn't a big deal.I also did my trans,a triple disc converter,VB kit and related internal hardware.Problem is now when towing and accelerating from a stop or onto the highway it bangs/slams into OD/LU and I mean scarry bang,so much the turbo barks. When not towing its not that bad,so read some other posts on valve body upgrades or shiftkits but the torque converter is a nice upgrade for the its a little tighter a when moving around in a parking lot you can really tell the difference.

When you did your trans work did you reset the computer? Sometimes if you dont you get the nasty shift into overdrive like you were explaining. My stealership charged me $85 to do my truck after i put my trans in. When i first did the trans i called the manufacture about the rough shifts , thats when they told me to have the computer rest . Boy oh boy did it smooth things out! Hope this helps.
