2003 5.9, CC, DRW, 4x4, NV5600, with aprox 105k on the odo, towing a Fuzion 384 full of fuel, toys, etc. Truck and trailer will be over 24k, and will be towed up every hill as fast as the speed limit and driving conditions will allow, at least twice a month. Altitude will be 0-7000 feet, ambient temps will be -40 to +95. Trips will be in the 150 to 3000 mile range while towing, the rest of the time its my daily driver/play truck.

I hate not being able to keep up with traffic, and I don't mind passing my buddies (when safe and legal) as they struggle to keep their EGT's in check.

BHAF, Edge Juice w/Attitude CS, AIR Dog II 200, and 5" exhaust are the only things I have done so far. (Please don't turn this into an edge/smarty debate, If I do anything else beyond what I have already done to this truck, I will get a smarty first thing, otherwise I am happy with what I have)

I'm leaning toward a BD Super B single (so I can upgrade to their compound turbo kit in the future if I need to), some 50 or 100 hp nozzles, and a twin disc Southbend clutch.

Or maybe splurge a little and get a compound kit that uses the stock turbo... Something like this II kit from Alligator.

I dont really care about drag racing an 8500 lb truck.

The throttle response of the stock turbo is fine when my low boost fuel is cranked up on the edge, I could stand to trade some response for top end towing power, or trade some top end for quick spool so its nice to drive around town 90% of the time. Essentially I am just concerned with building a reliable truck with easy to find parts that can be sourced from helpfull and knowlegable people. I have a budget from 3-8k depending on how much it turns out I will need to reach my goals and how well I can spread the parts out over the next 6-12 months. I really do not want to go into the short block, and would love to stay out of the head and valve train if possible.

Spend my money for me please?!

A south bend 3250 dd will work well since you plan to tow a lot. You wouldn't want to do any bigger nozzle with just a super b I have stock sticks and egts can go real high with the bdtd turned up if I don't watch them. I personally wouldn't go with ii anything too much money for an average product. I'm sure others will add a lot more useful information.

id get 50hp nozzles from ddp.. If you decide to go bigger they can do it for free. The 2003 trucks like more fuel than 04.5+ trucks so dont be afraid of fuel. check for boost leaks.. water/meth is a good deal for getting up to speed. An intercooler would be a goo deal also..

Compound that little super b bc it isn't gonna do much for you. Throw some 90s in it and turn the edge down, you should be able to let her eat like that

I want to try water meth, just because it sounds interesting to me and I like gadgets, but thats 25% of finishing off the Super B Twins kit. I'll probably do head studs and a South Bend 3600 DD before I go for more power.

I'm having trouble convincing my better half that I need more fuel when I can lay down enough smoke to dim the headlights of the cars behind me with just the Edge on Hot. (she runs clean on all the other levels)

A couple months ago I sold my '06 Duramax 2500HD for 23k (that I bought new for 42k) so I could get a dually/save a few bucks, and ended up with this '03 Cummins for $16,500 and have since spent every weekend in the shop, and an additional $7600 on it. Compounding would cost at least another 3500 if I go my intended route and finish up with BD. Not to mention the clutching upgrade for another 15-1600.

Just thinking out loud.... :S:

You don't have to get 90's, but if you want to put your foot to the floor while towing that load your going to need a lot more than that little super b or your gonna have a melt down

I don't plan on holding my foot to the floor past 1250*, at that point, as I always have, I will let up or down shift until I can hold between 1250 and 1400. My desire is to be able to maintain 65 mph at those temps or temps that people consider reasonable for a 20 minute long pull.

Damn Brook, I wish I knew you were looking for a new truck...I would have talked you into an 06. Better platform IMO. Especially since efi is available....you should get rid of the tuning part of your edge, and run smarty tuning. That will help ya out a little on the egts. And I see you already bought a turbo, I wish seen this thread sooner....I would have had to talk erick at browns and he would have set up!!

Nick?

I almost bought an 08 megacab, but it was twice the money and would have needed all the same upgrades.

Smarty should be here in a couple weeks, but I'm keeping the edge.

Yup it's Nick...yea the 08s around here are still goin pretty strong price wise

Yea for sure keep the edge for gauges...I just wouldn't stack them. If I recall correctly the edge is also a timing box, 2 timing boxes don't mix haha

Who are you buying your parts through?

If what I have been reading is true, I can leave the timing alone on the Smarty (run even numbers) and still run the Edge. Head studs are probably next on the list, followed by a new clutch, then I'll add a second turbo and some new injectors.

I've been buying all my parts from wherever I can get the best deal since there aren't any good diesel performance shops locally. Geno's and Alligator have been pretty good to me for my old 1st gen though.

theres no way u could throw more fuel at that super b and do the things u want... what u should do is pick up a stock he351 from a 2006 and add a ats aurora 5000... that would be a perfect setup for towing and would give u really low egts and a bunch of power... then u could throw fuel at that and have some fun when u want too...

I totally agree, thats the beauty of todays electronic diesels right? I can put in as much fuel as I can handle at the touch of a button. :party018:

I am a religious gage watcher, and the edge has nice safety features if I get lazy or I let someone else drive it. The super B single is temporary, but will hopefully be a nice upgrade until I can afford a clutch and the second turbo.

What I'm hoping is that I can start playing with the smarty and see some slightly lower EGT's at similar power levels I currently have with the Edge, then when I get compounds I should already have a handle on tuning.

Or I'll burn the thing down and we all get to see what my wifes face looks like when I tow home another 17,000 dollar piece of junk.

I still wouldn't risk running both. IMO the smarty does find by itself for what you are looking to do...if you want to stack it then stack with an mp8 or edge ez.

Jim at northern diesel is a great guy to work with. He is located here in Eagle River and he helps a lot with shipping!!

Since I caught you before you bought you next couple parts, here's my 2 cents lol...talk to Jim about a clutch before you order one or call erick at browns. He really knows his stuff!!! Next, since you are thinking about goin twins, when you buy studs. Buy the ARP 625s. They are more money but do it right the first time lol

Oh and that pick of your sled is nasty lol!!!

What about water meth? Or would it be better to just wait for the cash for more air?
personally me... i wouldn't run it... but thats just me... i like to be simple and make power with out it... its just like nitrous to me... i wouldn't run nitrous if i was shooting for 1000hp... it would be on fuel only... its just one less thing to worry about and in many cases its just a band aid...

if this was for my truck and i needed it to do what u want... i would return the super b and buy a he351 and do a s475 over stocker kit... its cheap, reliable, fun, performance... it would do a world of wonders for what u want to achieve...

and also the arp 2000/425's are plenty of stud for what u plan on doing... and there are many guys 750+ with them... the 625's are more of a need on the 6.7's
