Tow mirror conversion, a few questions that i dont understand from the other post

I am about to buy a set of tow mirrors for the 96. I have factory power mirrors in there now. what i dont get and i can not find the anwser on all of the other post that i have read. Why do i need a set of tow mirrors from a 2nd gen 00 and a set from a 3rd and then swap the mirrors on it. I have found 98 - 00 power tow mirrors. and from my understanding is that the 98 - 00 tow mirrors will bolt right up to my truck.
So if i buy 98 power tow mirror i will be good to go correct? I will not need the 3rd gen for any reason, correct?

I was wondering the same thing. I have never seen a straight answer about that either. However I found this article and saved it. Havent realy done more then glance at it.
If you want the factory tow mirrors, and want them to be powered on a 2nd gen, you have to buy a set from the 3rd gen and a set from the 2nd gen. The 2nd gen were manually adjusted. If you get aftermarket, there's no problem...unless you found a set of factory mirrors that have already undergone the swap.
Up untill recently no one made factory replacement power towing mirrors for the 2nd gens
cipausa.com !

best aftermarket two mirrors imho - power and heat available
also the ugliest

yeah i'm not digging those.

IMO the dodge towing mirrors win in my book. I hate GM's and Fords. whether those are pretty or not the Dodges look the best and offer the best visibility.
REQUIRES BRACKET FOR UPGRADE FROM NON-TOWING MIRRORS (AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE AT OUR CHECKOUT OR YOUR LOCAL DODGE DEALER)
They are selling you the "stems" from a 3rd gen and assuming you already have the manual tow mirrors from a 2nd gen. Or, that's the way I'm taking it...

I agree with DUAL K20's they are ugly!! My vote is the traditional Dodge towing mirrors.

I think what it is is there is a bracket that goes between the mirror and the truck. I did see a thread about that on here. saying that oyu have to get this piece to make them work.

Sorry, but that's incorrect. If you DO NOT have towing mirrors now, and you plan on adding towing mirrors, you have to buy the backing/support plates.
They go on the back of the mirrors.
Install the mirrors
Install the backing/support plate (1 per side)
Screw the nuts on and tighten down.
The support plates are just that, they help support the extra weight of the tow mirror hanging on the door.
I just installed a set of the Kool Vue mirrors 2 weeks ago (the ones in the link posted above).
You can't tell a difference from the factory tow mirrors. I had the manual tow mirrors and replaced them with the p/h Kool Vue's.

you have to buy the backing/support plates.
Do you have a Part Number for those Plates?

I think I am going to order a set of them.
so if i were to get the ones in the auction i would also need the backing plate? how much are they and where do you find them? my truck is an 02 with factory power/heat
Yes. The only people who don't need them are the ones who have factory towing mirrors

55156128AB - BR RH Reinforcement Plate
55156129AB - BR LH Reinforcement Plate
About $15 a piece from the dealer

Sounds like if you talk to them they will include a set
whats the difference with an 02? the listing says 98-01

Nice job on the part #'s.

They just have them listed for different years, they are all the same though. The mirrors should fit anything from 94-02. Just check the part # listed in the ad..........DG49EL and DG49ER for left and right, or as they have it listed........DG49ELR.
The 02 1500s have the 3rd gen body style. If it says if fits an 02 that doesn't help much. Make sure it fits an 94-02 2500/3500
Those part numbers were quoted from a thread at TDR, so I can't personally vouch for there accuracy, but others have agreed on the numbers
