So, I'm guessing there's a certain limit to
the size of the tires you run before mileage drops off considerably. Would like to run as tall as possible, but I'm still on stockers with no lift for fear of a big drop in fuel economy. I'm also guessing at some point, with all of the torque of the cummins, bigger tires are better on economy. Mostly highway driving as opposed to town, and lots of that in the snow. Thanks for your help.

My ride-2006 cummins 4x4 quad cab with long bed.
Any of you have any pics of this model lifted big?.

i think above 37s the economy takes a dump but you can regear and its not really that big of a factor...if you mod the enigine, and regear to the recommended gears, you can almost run any size tire you want be hardly be affected

Thanks for the input.

I definitely don't want to regear, not sure dumping thousands into mods is going to save me $ in the long run.

You're saying 37's should have the same fuel economy as my stockers now? Thanks again.

tall tires are like having higher gearing and its quite possible to get better mpg. the unsprung weight of a tall wide heavy tire will give you a hit in mpg

Taller tires are usually wider, and more aggressive. Taller, wider, aggressive tires are bad for mileage.

Personally,I wouldn't go any taller than 285s if you want to keep any sort of decent mileage.

I've read way too many posts about mileage going in the crapper with tires bigger than 285s to think otherwise.

it also depends on the weight of the tire/wheel combo... the heavier they are the more power that is needed to get them going and keep them going. i lost approx 2~3 mpg when I went from stockers to the current setup MM 951's & pro comp xtreme at's... the tires weigh in at 75 lbs each compared to about 40~45 for the stockers. the wheels are also heavier being an 18x9.

Im running 37" tires & on the HWY crusing 75-80 HPH I can get 19.5-21+ MPG with 3.55 gears. Bigger tires to a certin point will/can help with milage on the HWY but will drop it a little in the city. Just my .02

With the 3rd gen and 17" rims, there isn't as much of a choice in tires as there was when I had my '99. Back then we had tall and wide, wide and narrow, short and wide.

Withe the 17's+ it seems all we get is tall and wide. There's a lot of us around........me included........that think a tall narrow tire is the cats dupa for "off roading"!!!!!! Most of you dudes don't duck or goose hunt much......that's all I need to say!!!:w:

Tall tires

Tall and narrow is the way to go. I run an off-road machine much like a sandrail on 20's with 6.5-20 tires. Tread is only 5" wide and 34" tall. It looks a little odd I admit, but who can see it in 2 feet of mud with rooster tails. The only time ever I got stuck with it, is in mud over 3 feet deep.
For my 3/4 ton I am already looking at the BKT tires 38 x 10.5 -20 for the same reason. See my post elsewhere.
Keep them thin and tall, so you can go duck hunting. And the gas mileage will be great too.:peelout

For general purpose tires, like street, check out Firestone. They make a real good street 10 ply. I put 60,000 on a set in my 01. Nice tread for highway and great all weather traction.

I'm getting ready to look into a set as soon as Ma Mopar decides if they are buying back my flower pot or not.

285's on mine. My mileage stayed pretty much the same, although a lot of "town" driving will show a little lower mileage. I wouldn't go any bigger if you're worried about mileage.
