TIPM / Electric Trailer Brakes / Modulite

I had to have my TIPM replaced after a reflash failed to work. I want to protect this from happening again. My question is do the Moodulite units also protect the TIPM from surges with electric trailer brake controllers? I know they cover the lights but do brake controllers have to be rewired to be protected?
