Hey all,

I had my stock VGT turbo go out on me the other day. I spoke with BD diesel about their non VGT iron horn kits and purchased a 364 80 by .91 for my replacement. I was told it would be upwards of 3 weeks before I got it but it showed up in 4 days… (hurray for that, but now my timeframes wonky)

I use a CTS Edge tuner and have spoken with the company, they absolutely do not build custom tunes related to emissions as they got in trouble with the EPA years ago. So he advised me to find a local shop, buy a blank chip and have them build a custom tune to remove the DTCs that will pop up. I’m working on that now.

as for my question- will the truck run for the time being with the non VGT turbo installed our is it dead out of the water till I get my tune built for it? It really doesn’t matter to me if it runs a little rich or whatever,I just don’t want to damage anything. Let me know if you have any experience here and advice, thank you!

2008 Dodge Ram 3500, 4x4, full emission delete, soon to be non VGT turbo, flatbed, G56 trans.

My 12 ran all right and nothing detrimental when I did that change but it was better with the revised tuning.
That’s good to know, I figured it would be okay to at least run without damage but I wanted to at least hear it from someone else. Who did you use for the tuning? I am catching hell trying to find a tuning guy or company that is willing to touch anything with emissions. Thanks for the info though, I appreciate it

gonna have to do your own research on tuning, its illegal so folks don't name names around here, and most went under or underground. Im not even sure who is left in business TBH. Best of luck to ya on that.

Good to know a non-VGT will actually run in these trucks without a tune. A fixed turbo is kinda on my list for "one day". Along with a proper EB.. That's if I don't find nice a 04-07 5.9 with a 6 speed manual before then.

You can’t just put a fixed vane turbo on a legal emissions truck. As far as I know, no one has figured out how to cure the problems associated with that But it sure would be nice to illuminate the VGT From the rest of the problems.

Tuning isn't illegal, but removing emissions components is depending on where you reside. If you are tuning because of removing said components, then it could be said to be illegal due to the fact that it's directly related with the said above.
But in no way is emissions compliant tuning illegal. So long as you pass your local city/county/providence emissions, you should be good to go.

All of the shops that used to "D" are the ones that got in trouble. They would do that work and provide tuning for the work.
There is extra effort involved for emissions compliant tuning that a lot of people don't want to spend the time/money learning as I'm sure as a business, they have done the math (not to mention they got nabbed once so not going to risk their livelihood/business) and figured the ROI isn't there.

I believe the VGT is actually considered part of the emission system of thease trucks. I could be wrong there, but that’s the impression I was under.

yes your right, there is emission compliant tuning that is 100% legal… for now. ;)
