I’m replacing the water pump, and used a very small ratchet with a cheater bar.
Now I’m installing the pump and the tensioner has me confused

IT DOESNT SEEM LIKE ITS SITTING IN THE CORRECT SPOT now to put my ratchet back in the square hole used for taking the tension off (DOES THE ASSEMBLY NEED TO BE ROTATED BACK AROUND COUNTER CLOCKWISE)

to get back into proper position ??

to therefore put the belt back into its functioning place where it holds the belts tension
Please help, I took this deal on at night with poor lighting, and didn’t take any picture to use as a reference.
:(
***Love my Cummins, it’s best to not fall behind on maintenance once the oil starts leaking 🤬 but that’s any motor

The tensioner will only rotate to it's stop. The full travel is only about 90 degrees. Make sure you have the belt routed correctly. There should be a diagram on the radiator frame. Rotate the tensioner back far enough to engage the belt. It's a bit tricky with the fan shroud in the way and does require the same cheater bar you used previously.

Did you remove the tensioner? If so, did you get the alignment pin on the back of the tensioner in the hole that receives the pin?

Thank you for your reply
So 90 degrees is the max travel the adjuster should technically be able to turn
Then to put the belt back on I just need to use my bar and turn it as I had to remove the 👍belt

AS I was thinking the tensioner is not able to spring 180 degrees👎🏼

so please then tell me I should be able to install the water pump and not worry about the tensioner in the slightest, until I’m ready to put the belt back on

I THOUGHT WITHOUT THE TOOL IN THE TENSIONER THAT IT ROTATED AROUND 180 degrees turning it upside down. So I’m thank you sincerely and going to go try doing the second half with the day light out to help.

I will let you know 🙏

No reason to worry that I'm aware of. It will point down and toward the passenger side about 20 degrees with the belt off. With the belt on it will still be down and slightly left.

Here's what the belt/ belt tensioner arrangement should look like on an AC equiped truck. If you happen to have one of the rare trucks that didn't come with AC, the belt routing is different.

Nice shops. I'm just finishing a Clearspan building to work in and a paint booth.
Remember Earle Scheib ? "I'll paint any car for $29.95" I was one of his painters just out of high school. I envy your nice buildings.

Subtle is overrated.

Although I did go a little less loud on my second conversion project.

Your truck has a manual transmission, what are you using the trans cooler water supply port for? Got some kinda cool gadget planned?

I removed it after the picture was taken and installed a plug. It was a seriously difficult job. It would not turn because of the rusted threads. I ended up cutting it out, one little piece at a time.

My second car was a '53 Merc with the aqua blue/green Earle Scheib paint job. I paid $50 for it and it ran like a top until I wrecked it.

Wow that’s a beautiful sight, spotless cummins, and awesome color green 👍

mine has an awful oil leak out the front I’m told it’s a few thousand dollar fix
But the shop also mentioned something about using some kind of vacuum to draw in a sealant where the leak is at

just a bandaid temporary while I try to make enough to have it done right
The entire front suspension also needs to be replaced I’m told another $3000+

anyway my water pump I decided to use my pressure washer and try to remove some of the oil leakage from the work area I’m going to try getting it back together tomorrow give it some time for the motor and the mud below to dry

thanks for the belt routing I’m using a Haynes repair manual but have the worst luck repairing anything , so thanks I will let you know how it goes 🙏🙏

Haynes is emergency toilet paper. Do yourself a favor and either download the free factory service manual or get a paper copy. It will pay for itself in a very short time.

Haha, and its just about as good for that purpose as it is a service manual.

Maybe its true calling is emergency fire starting kindling, or a table leg stabilizer, or maybe floor jack cushion (you know something you put between the floor jack pad and the cars jacking point so you don't scratch the paint / powder coat on your fancy show car frame).

I would say the quotes for the oil leak and front end work sounds really high. But not knowing what’s leaking and the condition of your entire suspension then that’s just a total assumption on my part
The most typical front oil leak is the front timing cover crankshaft seal and I’d say more common front end issues are balljoints and track bar. However, if the KDP has fell out at some point and cracked your timing gear housing then yes, that’ll get expensive for a shop to replace

I see as I’ve been reading through it that it doesn’t actually cover any of my problems.

I will look into what you mentioned Thanks Again

with my water pump there’s no gasket included, the one that I took off looks okay?

think it’s okay to reuse it??

it looks just like a filter gasket I would wet with some clean oil before applying

If the o-ring is pliable and protrudes out of the groove you can reuse it. If it is flat and hard, no bueno.
