Is there any way to tell if a cluster has been changed? Any kind of a code, tamper seal, anything like that? I'm looking at an '06 reading 84,000 miles, shows 2450ish hours, which line up relatively close, I think - do the hours read from the cluster, or the ECM? Thanks!

You can go to a dodge dealer and have them hook to the computer and it will tell you all of the information in it.

They put a tape on the door and also the back of the cluster. However, this is only done where they are complying with the law.

So the ECM has an hourmeter separate of the cluster? This one has 44,xxx written in sharpie under the VIN sticker, that's what made me curious.... Would put it around 128,xxx.....
I know they were able to pull the total hours from the ecm on my truck when I lost the motor. It had the information not available on the new cluster which only had the hours and miles on it and not the total on the truck.

I cannot remember if they were able to get the miles or not.

The ECU stores total hours an miles both. When a dealer replaces a cluster they are supposed to have them programmed to the what the actual is.

The cluster will also store miles and hours so if one or the other dies it can be recovered. Takes special equipment to reprogram a used cluster with correct miles\hours.

When 3 of them that I know were replaced with new ones, the new ones would not accept the mileage as on the truck. They would only accept zero.

The one guy got it to accept the mileage and went down the road and it failed again. Seems they found it could not accept and not fail as well
